Barely a month after ACP Awuni Angwubutoge, the National Commander in charge of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) was assaulted by a teacher in traffic, one of his senior officers has also been slapped by driver at Odorkor in Accra.
The suspect, Nana Kwesi Agyemang, a trader, in the company of one Osei Yaw Akoto, allegedly slapped ASP Samuel Sasu Mensah, an officer in charge of investigations, at Odorkor Official Town Junction.
The two were spotted by the officer reversing recklessly which nearly caused an accident. When the suspects were queried on their action, they got infuriated and insulted the senior police officer.
Upon realizing that the victim was a police officer, Nana Kwesi Agyemang allegedly got out of the car, drew closer to the officer and gave him some hefty slaps, possibly to teach him a lesson. Information said the two drove off after the act but were arrested by uniformed policemen after they were given a hot chase.
Suspect Nana Kwesi Agyemang is currently resting in the cells of national MTTU pending trial while his accomplice, Osei Yaw Akoto, has been given a police enquiry bail.
Confirming the story to DAILY GUIDE, the Public Relations Officer In charge Of the National Motor Traffic and Transport Unit of the Ghana Police Service, Inspector Simons Tenku, said around 4:20pm on August 1, 2011, the suspects were spotted driving a Honda 4×4 vehicle with registration number GR 6423 Z, from Darkuman towards Odorkor Official Town Junction area.
Upon reaching Official Town Junction, they attempted to reverse their vehicle from a minor road into a major road and nearly ran into another vehicle.
When they were questioned by the senior officer for their action, the suspects got offended and without any provocations heaped insults on the officer.
At a point, the officer identified himself to the suspects but this even infuriated them as they retorted, “You are a police man and so what, who are you?”
He said suspect Nana Kwasi Obeng immediately got out of the vehicle, held the shirt of the senior police officer and gave him a number of hefty slaps. The officer was however rescued by some passersby. Inspector Simons Tenku said the two, after the act, jumped into their vehicle and drove off.
The senior officer also gave them a hot chase, crossed them with his vehicle at a spot near the Official Town blue kiosk and then called for assistance from the national MTTU.
The suspects then abandoned their vehicle and bolted in a cab. They were however arrested on August 2, 2011 from their hideout.
