The six police officers from the National Headquarters of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) of the Ghana Police Service who were arrested and incarcerated on charges of extortion have been bailed.

The six, Constable Owusu Kwakye, Constable T. Adinkra, Lance Corporal A. K. Sarfo, Lance Corporal D. Dankyi, Sergeant V.K. Asante and Apuyinga, were arrested on Wednesday August 24 for allegedly extorting money from motorists.

The bribe cops have since denied knowing how bribe money found their way into the telltale envelops which are being held as evidence for their interdiction.

They were caged at the cells of the Criminal Investigation Department Headquarters until Friday August 26 when they were bailed.

Sources said that apart from one officer who was seen taking money and throwing it into a nearby bush, after realizing the presence of the Integrity Taskforce, the rest could have escaped the watchful eyes of the taskforce.

It would be recalled that a taskforce on an integrity finding mission chanced upon the six officers from the National MTTU, Accra, at Akoti Junction on the Accra-Cape Coast road.

The six, who had in their possession a number of envelopes, told members of the taskforce that the envelopes contained licences belonging to defaulting drivers which contained the details of the owners, inscribed at the back for easy identification.

However, further probe gave the cops away, as various amounts of cash suspected to be money extorted from commuters, were found in the envelopes. The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Paul Tawiah Quaye, had since ordered their interdictions.

At the moment it is not clear when they would be marched to court, however all six persons are facing service enquiry and may face prosecution if enough evidence is gathered against them.

The Director of Police Public Affairs, DSP Cephas Arthur, has said the move is part of IGPs commitment to the image-cleansing campaign he launched last year.

He urged the public to have confidence in the police, as the Administration was doing everything possible to rid the agency of miscreants or bad nuts who might have found their way into the service and were denting its image.
