The chiefs and regents of the Abudu Royal family in Dagbon have resolved to perform the final funeral rites of the late Yaa-Naa Mahamadu Abdulai in the Old Gbewaa Palace.

The decision was taken at a meeting held in Yendi on Sunday and a statement from the family copied to Citi News said they have scheduled to meet again come January 2012 to commence preparation towards the performance of the final funeral rites of the late Yaa-Naa, as agreed by the two royal families under the Roadmap to Peace.

This followed the Abudu family’s recent warning of a possible re-emergence of conflict in the Dagbon Traditional Area, situated in the northern part of Ghana, on suspicion that the Andanis have stockpiled weapons in readiness for the installation of a new overlord.

The Abudus national spokesperson, Dr. Ziblim Iddi, pointed out in the statement that the move if indeed true contravened the existing agreement for peace in the Dagbon Kingdom.

“The Abudu family is committed to the roadmap to peace as the only credible and legal agreement between the two royal families for peace and reconciliation in Dagbon,” the statement read.

“That the roadmap to peace, a document signed by accredited representatives of the two royal families, took into consideration the decision of the Supreme Court in 1986 and the Reconciliation Agreement between the two royal families in 1987.

“That the family will meet again in January 2012 to commence preparation towards the performance of the final funeral rites of the late Ya-Na Mahamadu Abdulai in the Gbewaa Palace, as agreed by the two royal families under the Roadmap to peace,” it added.

It continued: “The family also resolved to resist, by any means necessary, the Kampakuya-Na’s expressed intention to enskin chiefs to chieftains currently occupied by Regents from the Abudu Royal Family. No Abudu Regent will perform his father’s funeral until the funeral of Na-Mahamadu Abdulai is performed in the Gbewaa Palace as that of a Ya-Naa.

“The family further resolved to establish parallel authority in Savelegu if the Kampakuya-Na enskin a chief to occupy the vacant Gate-skin of Savelegu in apparent violation of the Roadmap and in flagrant contempt of Court.

“The family finally appealed to the Government to, as a matter of urgency, reconvenes the Committee of Eminent Chiefs to continue with the mediation process. It calls on all members and sympathizers of the Abudu Royal Family to remain calm and keep the peace in their towns and villages. ”

The traditional area has not had an overlord since 2002 when Yaa-Naa Yakubu Andani II was assassinated during tribal clashes.
