Since the introduction of the National Farmers’ Day Award celebration in the year 1988 by the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, many farmers have been awarded and rewarded for their contribution to the national basketry.
The National Union of Ghana Students’ (NUGS) is not under any illusion of the significance of our farmers and fishermen to the overall health of the country.
NUGS wants to laud the Mills-led-administration for helping in the increased price of Cocoa which has helped in uplifting the livelihood of our Cocoa farmers across the length and breadth of Ghana
However, the Union wants to remark that, the Farmers’ Award Celebration in the country alone will not eliminate the constant nightmares of our farmers and fishermen inter alia; exorbitant price of outboard motors, inaccessibility of farmers to fertilizers, lack of an authoritative body to streamline activities of Shea butter and Citrus Farmers in the country.
The Union is by this statement;
• Calling on all Ghanaians especially the Youth to salute farmers wherever they are as a show of faith for saving the country from starvation.
• Calling on the Mills government to facilitate the setting up of the Shea Butter Board as well as the Citrus Board to streamline activities of farmers in such fields which holds the promise of boosting the foreign exchange of the country.
• We are again calling on the government to help subsidize outboard motors for our fishermen and make fertilizers accessible to farmers in the country.
• The Union wants to call on heads of both Takoradi Port Authority and Tema Port Authority to facilitate easy export of farm products especially Cocoa seeds. This Union believes will forestall the issue of Truck drivers, who threatened to embark on a demonstration at the Takoradi Port in the month of November, 2011.
The National Union of Ghana Students’ (NUGS) is of the firmed believe that we as a country will account for the work of farmers and fishermen when we begin to administer to their needs especially their constant nightmares.
NUGS stands with you and we congratulate our FARMERS on this day.
