CONTIUNOUS WAILING and shouting for help by a seventy-year-old man after being abandoned and locked up in a boy’s quarters for more than four months by his wife without food and water has finally been heard by residents of ACP Estates near Pokuase in the Ga West Municipality of the Greater Accra region.

When a team of police personnel, residents and management of the facility went to the house, the main gate to the house was locked with a big padlock, while weeds had grown all over the facility giving no sign of habitation.

However, after forcing the gate open, the team found Clearance Chargi lying half way on the ground in the dark, smelling and weak.

According to some residents who spoke to the DAILY HERITAGE they never knew there was a living being in the house until they heard the continuous cry of Chargi for food and water for several days.

“He was living with his wife and family for the past years but we never knew the wife had abandoned him here. By the nature of the house we thought nobody was living in the house,” some of the residents stated.

At the boys’ quarters were a wooden bed filled with cockroaches with two faded student mattresses, a wheel chair, two blocks which aided him to ease himself in a mini blue plastic bucket with another deep yellow plastic bucket containing dirty water. The door to the room was widely open exposing him to all kinds of reptiles.

Mr Chargi told the paper that, he was left in the house by his wife after she told him the mother was sick in Lome, Togo and wanted to attend to her. He said, the wife left him under the care of one Akwasi, but “he chooses to visit me anytime he pleases.”

The man who looked virtually at the point of death said he was once a teacher at Mawuli Senior High School after completing Physics and Chemistry course at the University of Ghana, Legon.

He mentioned his father as one of the former managing directors of Tema Developing Cooperation and that for many years he has not been able to trace his siblings who are still living in Accra.

“I was once living in the main building but was told one day by Mercy Chargi, my wife that I should pack into the boys’ quarters and since then this place has been my sleeping place,” he stated with tears flowing from his eyes.

Mr. Chargi revealed that he has seven children, some in Paris, France but could not tell whether they are aware of his conditions.

The residents are, therefore, appealing to his siblings, wife and the general public to help them locate the family in due time to avert any unforeseen circumstance.
