A part-time French teacher of Amasaman, near Accra, has been arrested for being in possession of 17 Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) prepaid meters worth GH¢11,900.

The 45-year-old man, Kwame Sowu, is said to have illegally acquired the prepaid meters to sell to customers at cheap prices.

The 17 prepaid meters and GH¢2,000 cash, believed to be proceeds from the sale of the meters, were retrieved from his house at Omarijor, a suburb of Amasaman, upon a police tip-off.

Police tip off

Briefing journalists, the Amasaman District Commander, Superintendent George Andrew, said on October 12, 2014, an informant reported to the police that the suspect had illegally acquired prepaid meters.

He said the suspect engaged the informant, who is an electrician, to fix prepaid meters for customers.

After the informant had fixed the meters, Mr Andrew said, customers requested for receipts but the suspect on all occasions could not provide the receipts.

This, the commander said, raised the suspicions of the informant that Sowu might have acquired the meters illegally. Therefore he reported him to the Amasaman Police.

Following the tip-off, the police went to Sowu’s house where 17 prepaid meters and GH¢2, 000 cash, were found.

Mr Andrew said the suspect sold a meter for GH¢100 but it was sold at GH¢700 by the ECG.

Interrogation

Upon interrogation, he said, the suspect claimed that one Emma, who was yet to be traced, gave him 35 prepaid meters to sell.

Mr Andrew also indicated that officials from the ECG had confirmed after inspecting the meters that they were their property. The police, he said, were yet to ascertain where the meters were stolen.
