The Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, has procured 10,000 waste bins for onward distribution to the various municipal and district assemblies in the Upper East region.
Other items procured and distributed include shovels, hand gloves, Wellington boots, wheel barrows, cutlasses and rakes.
Mr Isaac Dupey, Director of Public Relations at the Ministry told the Ghana News Agency in an interview that, the donation of the items was geared towards sustaining the National Sanitation Day (NSD).
He said the NSD has come to stay and the items were meant to encourage the various assemblies to acquire more for subsequent NSD exercises.
"In each of the regions we have organised the NSD, the Ministry had distributed such items and the intention is to encourage the various assemblies to acquire more to sustain the exercise," he stressed.
He advised the public to observe good hygiene by always keeping their environment clean especially when the raining season is about to set in.
He also called on the media to help in the education campaign to promote good hygiene to avert the outbreak of cholera.
"Last year, the number of cholera cases recorded was very high and the Ministry will appeal to the media to help educate the public on the need to keep the environment clean and avert its occurrence," he said.
