A retired Parish Priest in the Navrongo Diocese of the Catholic Church, Rev. Fr. Charles Akabote, has lauded the numerous benevolence and social supports extended to the socially disadvantaged in rural parts of the country.

He said while such assistance have helped bridged the poverty gap between the rich and the needy, it re-affirms our common belief in oneness as a Ghanaians.

Rev. Fr.Akabote was speaking at an end of year Christmas party for inmates and caretakers of the Mother of Mercy Babies’ Home at Sirigu in the Upper East Region.

The annual event was sponsored by the Rlg Foundation.

Some thirty inmates, workers of the home and children from neighbouring communities were feted to food and drinks and entertained with traditional cultural performances.

Rlg Foundation adopted the Home in April 2011, following a Joy FM news publication on the plight of inmates as well as sorry state of affairs at the time.

The Foundation has since been providing monthly financial support for the upkeep of the Home, aside the construction of boreholes for the community to improve provision of water and sanitation.

Three years ago, the Foundation donated a double cabin Pick-up to facilitate the administration of the Home, after learning its only means of transport had broken down.

The facility, administered by the local Roman Catholic Parish is a home to children, mainly infants whose parents either abandoned them, are died or accused of witchcraft.

Rev. Fr. Akabote said since Rlg Foundation partnership came into being, the overall running of the Home has improved significantly even though some pertinent challenges still exist.

“While commending the Rlg Foundation, I will not hesitate to join the call for more corporate organisations to come to our aid. Caring for the poor, the needy and the socially disadvantaged should be the collective duty of all of us”, Fr. Akabote said.

The Foundation had earlier donated items including provisions, detergents, food, mosquito nets and others to the Home.

Corporate Affairs Manager of Rlg Communications Group, Mr Emmanuel Arthur handed-over the items to authorities of the home with a renewed pledge to support the facility.

The Home currently has 15 children in its custody who are cared for by 7 Caretakers, 6 workers and 3 Roman Catholic Sisters.
