Police Stop DKM Demo In Sunyani

The Police in the Brong Ahafo Region have successfully stopped a planned demonstration against DKM Microfinance, God Is Love, Jastar Motors and Investment Company Limited and other defunct financial institutions by their aggrieved customers at Sunyani.

The demonstration, which was to come off yesterday after a  five-day notice had been served on the police, was aborted when the police managed to secure a court order  and prevented the  aggrieved  customers from  carrying out  their civic right, citing the possible eruption of violence as the reason.

The injunction granted by the court last week Thursday left the organisers frustrated.

The police said its intelligence showed that two different groups—Concerned Depositors and Sympathisers  and Concerned Customers of DKM, God Is Love and Jaster Motors—who had  both notified the police that they would demonstrate on the same day, had a disagreement on whether to go ahead or not. This is because one of the groups said they had learnt that efforts were being made to pay their money so there was no need to embark on the demonstration again.

According to the Regional Police PRO, ASP Christopher Tawiah, this group said they had learnt that the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, was in the region over the weekend to find ways to pay customers their money.

However, the other group refused to back down. This, according to the PRO, made it difficult to allow one group to go ahead because it could lead to a clash. He said the police therefore had to secure a court injunction to stop all of them indefinitely.

It must be noted that this is the  third time the  police in Sunyani have stopped aggrieved customers of DKM, God Is Love and Jaster Motors  from  embarking  on demonstration against DKM and others,  leading to speculations that it is because the top hierarchy of the police and the army, who also had their monies with the companies, had been paid. The police have, however, denied this.

Meanwhile the police, after securing injunction against the demonstrators, yesterday in the morning paraded the streets of Sunyani with their artillery and cars telling the demonstrators they were ready for any eventuality. ASP Tawiah again denied it was because of the planned demonstration. He also denied knowledge of allegations that the police had escorted individuals to take some properties of DKM Microfinance.

DAILY GUIDE can confirm that a judge has gone to take a generator plant from the premises of DKM under the guard of police officers. The company’s Toyota Hilux too has been taken away by another individual. Furthermore, DAILY GUIDE has gathered that DKM stickers on its travel buses have been removed and some of the buses have been added to other transport companies.
