The Greater Accra Region recorded 51 road accidents with four persons sustaining serious injuries between December 24 to 26, last year.

In 2014 and during the same period, 53 cases were recorded with three persons sustaining serious injuries.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Patrick Adusei Sarpong, Director General, Motor Transport and Traffic Department (MTTD) told the GNA in Accra.

According to the MTTD Boss, four persons were killed last year as against three deaths recorded in 2014.

ACP Sarpong said there had been a reduction in road accidents and a decrease in the number of deaths as well as the number of vehicles involved in accidents during the beginning of this year.

He said the Department would build on the achievements made last year to drastically reduce the number of deaths on the roads.

“If one person is killed we are not happy. We are going to continue to partner with all stakeholders to ensure that our roads are safe”, he said.

He said it was remarkable that during last year’s Christmas festivities no minor was involved in any road crash adding that this shows that parents are now more aware as a result of the educational initiatives of the Department and others.

ACP Sarpong said the Police intend to go to schools to educate the children on the need to be cautious on the roads as well as train them to appreciate the various road signs before they become adults.

“We are also continuing with Passenger Empowerment programmes so that passengers would be vigilant. If a driver is driving recklessly, the passenger must politely draw that attention of the driver and caution him.”

ACP Sarpong said the MTTD was also embarking on the enforcement of Driver’s Regulations and this does not mean that we are going to harass or frighten drivers.
