The Obuasi Municipality recorded 24 fire outbreaks during the first three months of the year with the loss of two lives and massive destruction of property.
Mr. Ben O. Carlis-Paitoo, the Municipal Fire Officer, who announced this said one of the incidents that left two people dead was found through investigations, to be arson.
He was speaking at a press soiree organized by the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) in the gold mining town of Obuasi.
This provided the opportunity not only to socialize but also highlight the operational difficulties firefighters in the municipality have been facing.
Mr. Carlis-Paittoo said the growing fire outbreaks gave cause for concern and asked everybody to heed safety education.
It was important for all to be alert and more careful in their use of electrical appliances and the handling of naked fires to reduce domestic, industrial, commercial and bushfires, he added.
He called for property owners to make sure that they installed smoke alarms and fire extinguishers.
He spoke of the determination of the GNFS to scale up safety education campaign in schools, markets and workplaces.
