The Ghana Police Service has ordered the cessation of motor-checks on the country’s roads with immediate effect.
A wireless message from the top hierarchy of the police in Accra Tuesday said “all motor checks in the country [are to be] suspended with immediate effect.”
It said personnel of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department of the Ghana Police Service are to be "used only for traffic management duties.

I think most people only understand motor traffic to mean traffic light. This is a dangerous reading of the law and interpretation of the word traffic. It includes every stretch of our highway and urban roads. Get it right
Lets be real, what should they check? Today in Ghana it is not possible to obtain or renew a driver's licence. Road worthy is similarly affected. Majority of drivers are carrying around 'covering notes', which can be issued by my grandmother at makola. So what will the police be checking, apart from using that as a pretext to take bribes and causing traffic?
Please google search- Duties of MTTU and Road traffic ACT 2004. The directive is right. The Police is only been lazy by standing at one location every time to extort money from drivers. its step in right direction but it can be done occasionally or randomly. please read ACT 2004 of road traffic act or search for responsibilities or duties of MTTU.
The directive is 100% correct..the police only stand on the road to take money or beg private drivers for money without checking anything, to me its nuisance on the road. The are more security treat out there than they standing by the road side to extort money just in the name of checking licence..u can't do this in any serious nation. Come to Tarkwa bogoso junction or any other check point and see how they make money..I'm a regular victim.
Ghana is just a ***barred word*** country to live in...no wonder we have more ffoolls in that country...which police chief in the world does this...i will never return to Ghana my mother land anymore...
Duty of MTTU is to control traffic and ensure sanity on the roads and not to check drivers license. It is only hypocites who will see something wrong with this directive. Have we forgotten that this drivers license checking thing is the basis for all the bribery and corruption of police officials on our roads? So now if I err on the road, instead of seizing my drivers license and collect bribe, they will just have to process me for court. If the court finds me guilty, I may be fined and the state will get what rightfully is due it. This is a step in the right direction.
This directive to the Police is weird and we need more explanation to this. Come to think of it, the Police is going to allow for now, thugs to move about freely and drivers to flout traffic regulations with impunity, ***barred word*** to steal vehicles and go about without a check? Come on, Mr. IGP put your act together well. Whatever the motive for such directives, it is my view that it must inure to the general benefit of the populace and should not create any burdens for us as a people.
To allow NDC thugs to move about freely with guns and machetes without being stopped. That is the main reason.
WOW WOW WOW !!! This directive can not be meant for good Intention. This is not a good news at all. How can the NDC be soo DEVILISH like that. Can you imagine the number of young guys who do not have Driving Licence to start driving on our street? A number of people are going to take advantage of this directive and jump into any car they may find available and drive. This this purely for VOTE buying full stop. After election it will bounce back.
