Teacher unions have protested against threat by the Education Minister; Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh that basic and second cycle school heads who record 90 percent failure in their schools final exams will be sacked.
The unions accused the minister of failing to identify problems that confront the educational sector before making that pronouncement. The Education Minister while addressing heads of senior high schools (SHS) in Kumasi as part of a two-day familiarization visit to the Ashanti Region emphasized that any school head who superintends over a failure of over 90% cannot be allowed to stay in office.
Reacting to the issue on Onua FM on Thursday, the General Secretary, Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), David Ofori Acheampong said “it is not right to blame teachers”. He asserted, “We should blame the government for this because go to schools in Accra and find out, only KGs have printed syllabus.
The rest are on pen drive and teachers will be called to come for it and print them.” He said “the logistics are not there so if they will sack teachers, then the minister himself will be sacked because it will mean all those in the chain of command did not do their work well and that is not the way to go”. “If we want to find the way to solve it, that is not the way to go and we shall not wait for such thing to happen.
The previous government did the same. They never saw anything good in teachers and that is not the way to go”, he lamented. David Acheampong said “this will not happen in the country and we are ready for them”. The President of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Christian Addai Poku also remarked, “I am surprised about the comment and it is really unfortunate”.
“On what bases did he said 90%. How about the teachers, workers and the people who are going to work?” he queried. He said “we need to motivate them and not threaten them. You don’t just conclude that because the children failed, the headmaster is the cause”. Mr. Addai Poku explained that “if you duel on the headmasters alone, it does not make sense. If that is his agenda, then we have a problem. If he is going to use threat to achieve his goals, then there is a problem”.

Look let me tell you something, things have changed we are in a modern world. Make no excuses, if you fail to perform you go home. it simple. i think government business should be taking seriously. some of the teachers these days do not teach the children because they themselves schooling. GO to the private sector, you have no reason to fail because you know you will be taken out if you fail.
We have no standards and that is why we are failing as a nation. These teachers think they can threaten everyone. I know of some teachers using pupils on their private farms. Some lock them up in a classroom and go to sell their goods in their shops. There must be consequences in our society. Dialogue is the key here. Both parties must meet instead of them issuing threats!!
I just don't get it what the Teacher Unions problems are. The man has set targets for you, you only have to send your needs to achieve the targets. Do you want to be where you are? Don't lend to the credence that you just want to have only what is due you. I know of some teachers who feel let down when their students fail exams
What a hell are these teachers talking about? If u superintends 90% failure why must u be kept at post? If they give their business to a manager and constantly make losses will they keep that manager? no wonder they dont even send their wards to the very schools they teach. Y3 gyigyi a so ma ni bon w) ghana. All the time teachers are want someone to motivate them, if your salary is not motivating u to work quit! Some teachers dont attend classes some to always late, others with flimsy excuses e.g erh when it was time the class rep did not come to call him. i believe when the job of heads is put on the line they will hold lazy teachers to the task and they together will solve the external environmental challenges facing the teaching profession. it is the task of a teacher to transform a dull student to intelligent student. Minister pls be bold and even sack those unqualified subject teachers. e.g B.ed music teaching Elective maths etc etc Education must not be politicize
this is what we need yess so that people will not be sleeping on their duty,l support this more, even in the US it is done
But if you record 90% failure then what are you doing in the school as head? Aaah, pls, what at all do we want in this country? If you don't agree with what the Education Minister is saying, because that's what you want to do, I think you can get a better platform to discuss that but not just opening your mouths this way to say he should be sacked, do you pay yourselves? Is it your own school? Are teaching your family members only? Pls give us a break and stop behaving like uncultured people.
90% and you are fighting? Are proud of that? Yes I know the logistics are not there, but did you hear the conditions set by Napo? He said, we will give you the necessary logistics, but if you don't make more than 10% pass, you will go! Should this be a fight? I think you guys should resign and not Napo. What are we doing to our country? 90% and you don't feel ashamed? Oh, Ghana!
Teachers please sit up.Is 90% fail a good result for teachers to also fight back? If you have problem with what Napo said, just gather your points and have a meeting with him. If you are a head of school and your school get 90% fail do you want to be rewarded? When it comes to this point then the free SHS will be meaningless, because it will be sending your ward to go and eat and come back home.please teachers sit up, the failing students are too much
In the us targets are set ,if you don't meet them u r fired or u fire urself. He knows that infrastructure is not that good hence pass rate of 10% if infrastructure is world standard 60% pass.
I cannot imagine that teachers are fighting this extremely low performance standard. Where in the world do you record over 90% failure and remain in your role. Unfortunately many Ghanaians have a mediocre outlook to business performance and will therefore support the unwarranted protests from the teachers
