A campaign to boycott Marwako chain of restaurants has been launched on social media following an alleged assault on a female Ghanaian staff by a Lebanese supervisor.
Jihad Chaaban, 26, brother in-law of the owner of the restaurant, is said to have angrily grabbed the neck of Evelyn Boakye, 25, and allegedly dipped her face into blended raw pepper, which he had purportedly poured onto a table.
Evelyn had her face allegedly rubbed in the stuff for more than 10 minutes while Jihad Chabaan, reportedly squeezed her neck and yelled abusive words at her.
The incident, which has attracted wide condemnation, has led to some persons proposing that Ghanaians stop patronising food prepared by Marwako, in solidarity with the victim, using the hashtag: #BoycottMarwako.
The hashtag was trending wildly on social media as at yesterday – a week after the alleged attack.
Many are of the view that the decision to stop patronising meals prepared by the restaurant would serve as deterrent to other expatriate companies, so that they would learn to respect the rights of their employees in line with the laws of the country.
Management of Marwako claimed that the suspect had been suspended, indicating its readiness to cooperate with the police in dealing with the issue.
“Management assures its clients and the general public that it does not and will never condone mistreatment of its workers and therefore condemns in no uncertain terms the alleged assault,” a statement issued said.
The incident happened on Sunday, February 26, 2017, when Evelyn was asked to help in the Full Chicken Department, where she was instructed to blend fresh pepper for the seasoning of the chicken.
After blending the first set, Evelyn, realising that the sound of the blender was not normal, reportedly decided to find out what the problem could be by turning off the start knob.
That was her ‘offence’ that allegedly instigated the assault on her by the Lebanese supervisor who was initially shielded from police enquiries by management until the issue attracted public attention.
The statement indicated, “The branch supervisor at the centre of the unfortunate development has since been suspended, without prejudice, pending investigations and disciplinary sanctions over the alleged act.”
“The said Abelenkpe branch supervisor, Mr Jihad Chaaban, has been interrogated by police and is currently on bail pending further processes.”
He is expected at the police station today for further interrogations.
The Public Relations Officer of the Accra Regional Police, Assistant Superintendent of Police, Afia Tenge, confirmed that the police received the complaint from the victim on February 28, 2017 and immediately arrested the assailant.
She said the Accra Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP), Nana Osaberima Oware Asare Pinkrong III, had since directed the Tesano District Police Command to parade the suspect before the command today.

Boycott!! Boycott!!!!
This is not an issue of whether Ghanaians do the same to their fellow Ghanaians. That is N0NS3NS3. You saw the lady who was killed in Saudi Arabia whilst the police were looking on. Don't they have laws in their country or they are a lawless country. That is why Trump had, is and will still be MY MAN. We must protect out citizenry first and foremost and this MUST DONE WITH ALL THE FORCE AND MIGHT OF THE NATION, ELSE WE SHALL START BREWING GODFATHERS IN OUR COMMUNITY TO SEEK JUSTICE LIKE MARLON BRANDO OR AL PACHINO in GODFATHER SEQUEL. You can molest me when I am in your country but if it is my country, ooooh! MY GOD, not to any of my descendants or offspring's, because it lead to diplomatic impasse, WHAT NONS3NS3. If I travel outside of this shores of Ghana, I am taking a big risk and I can live with it but not in my backyard. JUSTICE MUST NOT ONLY BE DONE, BUT MUST BE SEEN TO BE DONE. We as a country SHOULD FOLLOW THIS CASE CLOSELY, WHETHER THROUGH THE LEGAL MEANS OR OTHERWISE. WE SAID WE WANT CHANGE. NANA, KINDLY PROVIDE US WITH THE LEADERSHIP WE HAD CRAVED FOR AND STILL DO.
Or am I excessive? And we went to Independence Square to celebrate what, 60 years of..... while foreigners dictate terms in almost everything in this country? This man does not belong to a democratic environment so why are treating him like with laws? You dip or spread a human face in pepper in her own land of birth? I swear that if meet this man, i will slap him and go to jail.
heeer kofi wassa wa'gyimi paa, no boycott but what??? you people let these asians take us for granted. lets boycott, their monies are with us. we buy for them to make thier stu. pid moneyand then bluff us.
Henceforth, all foreign owned restaurants must install cctvs. simple as that. If you don't have proof how can you prosecute?
There is no need boycotting rather the individual must be dealt with per the laws of the land.Boycotting will achieve nothing ,rather it is the other employees who stand to loose because i know the lady will be well compensated which might help in lifting her from her current status. So nobody should spearhead crusade to kill the jobs of others.I still have the graphic journalist who was assaulted by Asamoah Gyan on my mind, that was smart. The lady has hit his jackpot and she should count her self lucky that someone broadcasted her issue.Others have receive worse treatment for nothing.I will advise her not to ignore compensation by the company,if she follows the police to court she should expect her compensation in 5years.Even the company can defend its self and the attacker might not be well resourced to pay his compensation.
Am not sure of what this #BoycottMarwako intends to gain. If there is an issue it should be dealt with as such but should not be the company to suffer for it. if u say we sholud boycott their food bcos of an individual, what about the the over 100 persons who will be jobless as a result. are we going or coming...the supervisor is an individual and should be made to face the laws of Ghana dats my view.
It"s so painful that this case is still discussing. sometimes our authorities makes us feel bad and even regret to be a Ghanaian just common Lebanese to maltreat my lovely African lady, someones futures wife. Gender ministry should take action very well to protect the women across nation wide.
Yes Gov't must take this seriously, but we shouldn't forget that Ghanaians do worse to fellow Ghanaians than foreigners. We should allow the law take its own course instead of pushing the gov't. I worked in one African country, where maidservants prefer to work for foreigners to working for locals. Ghanaian Parents, grandparents, teachers beat, burn, cut ie torture their own and no one complains. When its a foreigner, he/she should be killed. Lets be fair to all.
