The atmospheric heat currently experienced in the country, is the result of the sun’s present position, Mr Michael Padi, Senior Meteorologist at the Ghana Meteorological Agency has said.

The sun has just crossed the equator from the Southern Hemisphere into the Northern Hemisphere, ” which means the sun is now very close to us”.

Mr. Michael Padi, who was speaking to the Ghana News Agency in an interview said the hot weather conditions would peak in April, when the sun would be closest.

He explained that the beginning of the rainy season was typically characterised by intense heating saying, “for evaporation which leads to the formation of rain clouds to take place, there must be heating.”

The senior meteorologist said convective rain clouds were forming as a result of the pertaining hot weather, meaning that heavy rains, accompanied by thunder and lightening were to be expected during the peak period of the rainy season.

Mr Padi said Southern Ghana was currently experiencing the major rainy season, adding that the rains would get heavier and more frequent when the season reached its peak around the month of April.

He said Northern Ghana would however experience its major and only rainy season in August.

Mr. Padi said there were also some isolated cases of rain-fall in Akim-Oda and the eastern portions of the country adding that Ho for example had 44.8mm of rainfall on Saturday.
