Road Safety Committee Worried About Unauthorised Speed Ramps

The Brong-Ahafo Regional Road Safety Committee, on Wednesday expressed concern about the construction of unauthorised speed ramps on some major highways in the region.

The committee has therefore appealed to the Ghana Highways Authority to do something to work around the clock to eliminate the practice by communities along the highways as they served as major causes of road accidents.

At its 2017 first meeting in Sunyani, the committee also appealed to communities along the highways to deist from the practice and collaborate with relevant institutions for the construction of a more engineered speed ramps at needed areas.

The committee is made up of representatives from the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC), Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), transport unions, Ghana National Fire, National Ambulance Service, Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority and the Department of Urban Roads.

Mr Samuel obeng Asiamah, the Acting Brong-Ahafo Regional Manager of the NRSC, observed that the unauthorised speed ramps on the Sunyani-Kumasi highway were unacceptable.

He cautioned that the situation needed urgent attention before the unexpected happened on the highway.
Mr Richard Amankwaa, the Brong-Ahafo Regional Secretary of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), said the union shared the sentiments of the communities along the highways, but they did not have the right to construct the speed ramps.

Mr Daniel Ansah, a feeder road engineer at the Sunyani Municipal Assembly, noted that over-speeding and reckless driving were some of the factors that necessitated the unauthorised construction of the ramps and urged the police to check over-speeding.

Superintendent Oppong Asirifi, the Brong-Ahafo Regional Commander of the MTTD said road safety was a shared and collective responsibility and required collaboration from all stakeholders.

He said the police basically relied on information from the people and advised them to support the police in the fight against general crime in the region.
