Agbogbloshie Clash: Government Moves To Retrieve Illegal Arms

The Interior Minister has directed security personnel deployed to Agbogblosie where rival ethnic groups have clashed to also retrieve all illegal weapons from residents.

Ambrose Dery has directed that the security personnel to begin a door-to-door exercise to clear the slum-dwelling of unregistered arms.

The move comes after at least two people died in clashes between Konkombas and Dagombas at the bustling market enclave that also serves as dwelling from the two ethnic groups.

A dozen others, including a pregnant woman, are in critical condition following the attacks.

Details of the cause of the clashes are sketchy, but some residents attribute it to an old political and ethnic rivalry between the two tribes.

There is currently a very high-security presence – a joint police and military force – in the area, however, the Interior Minister wants more to be done.

Both sides are said to have used arms and other deadly weapons in the attacks.

“The police and the military are capable to seek out the arms and to recover them if you hold them illegally,” he told Joy News’ Favour Nunoo.

Mr. Dery has also warned civilians against holding arms in the area, promising that they would be dealt severely.

Meanwhile, the Regent of the Great Dagbon Kingdom and Acting President of Dagbon Traditional Council has condemned Tuesday’s attacks.
