Pastor Mensa Otabil,General Overseer of the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC) has revealed what he believes to be the actual cause of filth in Accra.
Addressing his congregation during a sermon, he argued that the main reason for Accra's dirty streets and chocked gutters are the poor sanitation habits of persons living in the city.
"The ground never produces rubbish or bottles ... Accra is not dirty, it's the persons living in it that are dirty, Accra can't be dirty on its own" he argued.
Mensa Otabil's assertion follows a recent report by the World Health Organisation (WHO) which shows that Ghana's capital city of Accra ranks as the most polluted city in the world with the measure of "very high" air pollution totalling 86.11 percent.
Sanitation minister, Joseph Kofi Adda, has come under wild criticism over the poor sanitation crisis in the country but he says it takes time to keep Ghana clean.
According to him, "the overnight solution people are expecting to get from the Sanitation Ministry will not happen just like that. It will take some time".
The minister says his ministry inherited a country heaped with rubbish across towns and cities and that it takes a long time for Ghana to become a clean city. "As a minister, my role is not to go round with a broom and wheelbarrow to sweep and collect rubbish.
I can assure you by the end of the year you will see Accra very clean,” the minister assured Ghanaian during an interview with Starr FM. The issue of sanitation continues to be of grave worry to the government. President Akufo-Addo recently engaged the services of major sanitation firms on best ways to tackle issues of sanitation in the country.

I perfectly agree with Pastor Mensa Otabil, it is the people who are dirty. When we dispose off waste properly and not on the streets, Accra will be clean. Let us change our attitude
ARE AKUFO ADDO AND BAWUMIA NOT HUMAN BEIGNS LIKE YOURSELF? WON'T THEY DIE?
that's factual... those living there contributed 99.9% of the dirt in the city.. truth hurts ***barred word*** ***barred word*** and listen to wise talk.
The message is true but not consistent. No wonder it is receiving mixed reactions. Dr. Otabil is a respected motivational speaker who has never been able to manage his political leanings too well. I remember clearly sometime ago where he would have attributed this to 'leadership and institutional failure'. Without even specific mention of political leadership, most of the time it is not difficult to infer from his posture on national issues or discourse, his political tastes. Whilst it is his personal and citizenship right to have political preferences like any other human being,we expect a certain level of neutrality or some consistency in addressing issues of national dimension. It is true that leadership and institutional failure as well as undisciplined behavior of indigents collectively account for the filth in Accra. However, to convey and promote a message for change, the message must be the same and carry the same importance any time it is delivered irrespective of the political regime in place. After all it is the same problem: a filthy city/nation inhabited by the same people regardless of which political regime is in power! So when in one regime you blame the problem on 'leadership and institutional failure and in the other regime you blame the same problem on the people then you are clearly seen to be inconsistent. Having said that, you have the right to your choice of words but you also have the responsibility to be accountable for those choice of words.
WHo gave birth to you, Mary? You super intelligent. this man is a snake. When NDC government is in power he attributes everything to the government but when NPP is in power it is the people. He is a bussiness man not a man of God. Snakeman Read Romans 2.
is the osofo suggesting that mensah otabil, nana addo and vice pee are also dirty?????(they all live in Accra)!! charismatic politics paa nie???
This has always been your preaching whenever NPP is in power, every issue is the people NOT the Govt but when NDC is in power all negatives including filt in Accra are from poor Governance. Continue using your pulpit like this.
truth hurt, keep up telling truth. what are accra people leaning from this talk?
I think we are not preaching the bible very well, cos as we gather every Sunday we talk about some small part of the Holy Bible. I wish we preach about cleanliness more to fornication and others so that the country will be neat. We are not dirty.
When you don't clean your surroundings especially in front of your house & you shower put on your clothes to church on Sunday, Is just a matter of time that Cholera , Malaria etc will attack yourself & your family. Common sense should tell you cleanliness is next to Godliness.
