Conversion Of Male Dominated Halls Into Mixed Still Under Consideration - UG Public Affairs Dir

The era of single-sex dominated resident halls in public universities may be coming to an end sooner than later, Director of Public Affairs at the University of Ghana has revealed.

Mrs. Stella Amoa noted that the incident of clashes between students of Commonwealth Hall at the university and Katanga, from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology was an issue of concern and as a result universities of higher learning will meet to take a decision on the matter.

“…these incidents occur largely because the students are in an all-male hall. I know there are a lot of strong points for having an all-female or all-male hall.

But there are also some drawbacks to these all-female, all-male halls in spite of the strengths and I think with these frequent clashes all universities of higher learning will meet and probably come to some conclusion and the University of Ghana I’m sure will bring this to the front burner again,” she stated.

An injunction placed on an action to convert the Commonwealth Hall into a mixed graduate hall in 2010 prevented the university from carrying it out. But clashes between two all-male halls from the University of Ghana and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) have pushed for the case to be revisited.

Heads of higher learning institutions are expected to meet to discuss the resolution of cases such as these to bring lasting solutions.

A resident of the Commonwealth Hall was this week given severe beatings and an ugly haircut by rival Katanga Hall residents of KNUST.

He was threatened with death by his attackers who exacted ignominious pleas for clemency from him.

The students from KNUST were at the University of Ghana to participate in the debate competition between the halls.

But in a twist of events, an escalated clash Monday between the Vandals and Katanga boys left one person injured and 10 others picked up by the Police.

The clash is believed to be fueled by the video of the attack on the Vandal which went viral on social media.

In the video, the student, wearing a Vandal polo shirt is bullied by some other students whose faces are not shown.

They ask him to plead for mercy and to ask his fellow Vandals to come and pay a ransom for his release.
