Sixty-one Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) within the Kpandai District Assembly of the Northern Region have been assisted to be self-sufficient. The beneficiaries, who were selected by the District Assembly in consultation with the Assembly members, were presented with ruminants, fridges, provisions and cash, totalling 76, 121 cedis.

The amount was taken from their three per cent share of the District Assemblies Common Fund. Government in 2017 took a decision to use three per cent of the Assemblies Common Fund to secure the interest of PWDs.

Presenting the items to the beneficiaries, District Chief Executive for Kpandai, Emmanuel Kofi Tatablata expressed concern about the poverty level of the PWDs. He indicated it was necessary to support them to improve on their livelihoods. “Kpandai district has majority of its people being poor. This means that persons with disabilities are not left out,” he observed.

Mr Tatablata encouraged the beneficiaries to make judicious use of the support they have received to make life comfortable for them. “The assembly since 2017 has seen a tremendous improvement in the lives of PWDs who benefited from the fund and so is a challenge to these set of beneficiaries to also do same”

A visually impaired farmer, Philip Paul, expressed gratitude to the Assembly for the support. He indicated he applied for the support after he went blind some three years ago. “I keep applying for the past three years since I became blind but this time, I have been considered, so I’m happy” he said.
