Conference On Role Of Queen Mothers In National Development Held

The Eastern Region Queen Mothers Conference & Exhibition is a capacity-building initiative designed to encourage the collective efforts of Queen mothers to spearhead community development projects.

This event is the first of its kind to be organized by the Nana Tiaah Ampem Darkoa Foundation (NTAD Foundation) to support community development in Eastern Region of Ghana.

Speaking at the Conference which brought together several Queen Mothers from the Eastern region, the Special Guest of Honor, the President of the National House of Chiefs, Ogyeahoho Nana Yaw Gyebi II who doubles as Omanhene of Sewhi Anwiaso said Queen Mothers are clothed with the authority to nominate the new Chief whenever a vacancy occurs, providing wise counsel to the chiefs and his elders, rallying all women together, keeping an eye on social conditions within the society and promoting peace and development.

He also pointed out that, the Queen Mothers are expected to be role models and provide leadership to young ladies in the area of education, hygiene and many more.

On her part, the President of the Eastern Region QUEEN MOTHERS Association who is also the Paramount Queen mother of Akyem Abuakwa state, Nana Adutwumaa Dokua has tasked her colleagues to advocate against cultural practices that do not go in conformity with modern way of life.

The Eastern Regional Director of Education, Margaret Nsiah Asamoah also added that, Queen Mothers are doing well in terms promotion of girl-child education in the country and through their collaborative effort, the country has been able to reach parity between boys and girls at the basic level which will soon be achieved at the secondary level as well.

The Mawerehemaa of Apirede Akuapem and the Founder of Nana Tiaah Ampem Darkoa Foundation, Nana Tiaa Ampem Darkoa stated as well that, the conference was to encourage Queen Mothers to step up their efforts and be able to do what is expected of them in the communities. According to her, the program will be a biennial event occurring once in every two years. She used the opportunity to call on Queen mothers and various stakeholders in the Eastern Region to come together and dialogue on community development in the Eastern Region.

This program attracted some paramount chiefs and government officials like the Eastern regional Minister Hon. Seth Kwame Acheampong, Otoobour Djan-kwasi, Akuapem Adonten and Aburihene.
