Mobile for Good is a project that will bring together Non-governmental Organisations (NGOs) and social enterprises with innovative mobile solutions that deliver social change to compete for the ultimate price.
The mobile technology initiative must aim at solving a problem or need in health, education, environment and economic development etc. The launch idea is to organise a panel discussion inviting various stakeholders in mobile technology to set the agenda for the need for innovative technological ideas to solve social issues in the country.
This approach will engage the various stakeholders including NGO, technology students, enterprises involved in mobile technology. Several organizations working under different sectors were assembled at the launch to explain to the public what they have been doing.
Mpire Infobusiness System, developed a MoJa mobile app that creates the avenue and incentives for volunteering as a blood donor.
The cloud based app with back-end makes it possible for the National Blood Service to keep its stock replenished, search, march and conveniently contact inspired donors, in case emergencies.
VOTO Mobile also developed an app to help Ghanaian organizations in many sectors to tackle social problems using mobile-based reminders, education programs, feedback surveys mobile-based reminders, education programs, feedback surveys, and other interactive communications.
Through mobile technology, Kharis foundation came out with something to reach out to people living with HIV (PLHIV) AND HIV. The technology has been operating in the Greater Accra, Eastern and Western region.
tinyDavid LTD working under the Health sector, came out with mobile technology advancements in the provision of emergency health in Ghana in order to bring down response times and bring up accuracy in locating victims and to safe lives just in time.
To enable health managers to make informed decisions and effective interventions, Centre for Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Services developed an app that can they can now remotely collect feedback, track and monitor child and maternal healthcare delivery activities in Ghana using IVR technology and location intelligence through GPS/GIS mapping. They chose Gomoa West District and Central Region as their location.
Health Assistance Training School, Tepa (HATS Tepa) came up with a project which aims at adapting well-regarded teaching content into electronica format. This way the content will be available on mobile phones and can consequently be used independently of the availability of books or other written materials.
Educators International looked at t raining Ghana teachers how to teach reading using phonics.
Speaking at the event, the Chief Executive Officer of Vodafone Ghana, Haris Broumidis stated that Vodafone Ghana places invaluable importance on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and continue to look for creative opportunities to contribute to the communities in which we operate through the Vodafone Ghana Foundation.
“Our CSR initiatives involve a wide range of stakeholders including employees, business partners, suppliers, customers, public authorities and NGOs representing local communities, as well as the environment”, he said.
Hon. Ato Sarpong, deputy Minister for Communications was also there to grace the event. He noted that Mobile technology has become an essential part of life on which millions of people depend for everyday and emergency communications. “It is a factor that is making economies, businesses, and individuals interact easily in ways that were difficult to comprehend some decades ago”, he observed.
He continued that government finds initiatives such as the ‘Mobile 4 Good’ programme laudable. He added that such innovation is directly in line with “our agenda to deliver social change in health, education, environment and economic development”.
He ended by end by saying that the Ministry will continue to support the Vodafone and its Foundation as they strive to empower Ghanaians in every area of their lives.
