The Executive Assistant Director for Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) of the United States, Eric Goldstein, has disclosed that social media in this modern era of communication is a perfect tool for communication in the cyber space.
According to him, if institutions are going to reach the broad stakeholders, it is vital to adopt the right security measures and all levels of communication must be employed including social media.
Speaking to selected journalists undergoing a virtual cybersecurity training by the U.S. Foreign Press center, the U.S. CISA’s Executive Assistant Director intimated that social media has become the global fabric for instant communication and that it has become very necessary for it to be used to reach a larger audience in the bid to educate and the need to protect the cyber space from cyber-attacks.
"If we are going to reach the broad stakeholders that we need to be in touch with to drive adoption of the right security measures, we need to use all levers of communication. And that includes of course in this modern era social media, and so we do a wide range of media availability sessions. Of course, we are ubiquitous on the conference circuit. Just this week in D.C. we are at a major conference called Billington where we’ve been speaking with the media all week".
"But we also think that social media is really important here, right? That is now really the global fabric for instant communication. Of course, our Director, Jen Easterly, has a significant presence on Twitter and other social media channels, and we have found that to be really effective in getting the word out to stakeholders around the world in a really rapid, frictionless way".
The CISA’s Executive Assistant Director for Cybersecurity Eric Goldstein further reiterated that journalists play a key role in ensuring the safety of the cyber space and in as much as they using the traditional medium to educate the public they need to focus their attention on the new era and brand of communication which is the social media .
“We at CISA believe that journalist have a major role to play in disseminating information and we entreat you to adopt modern forms communication including the new norm in order to reach a larger audience”.
Highlighting the work of CISA, Mr. Goldstein explained that they bring together partners to engage in this continuous information sharing, planning, and enrichment.
"One great example of this work in execution is our Shields Up effort, which we initiated subsequent to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, when we brought together partners, including international partners across Europe and around the world, to rapidly understand evolving malicious cyber activity targeting Ukrainian networks and enabled us to produce products, information, guidance to help organizations not just here in the U.S.”
He continued “We know that combating Cybersecurity threat cannot be done by government alone, we need a collaborative effort of everybody including the various stakeholders especially journalist who reach a larger audience in their line of work”.
About CISA (CYBERSECURITY AND INFRASTRUCTURE SECURITY AGENCY)
CISA has the privilege of serving as America’s Computer Emergency Response Team, or America’s CERT. And in that role, we engage in operational collaboration every day with over 100 countries around the world with their respective cyber defense organizations, because we know that malicious cyber actors are almost never targeting organizations in only one country.
