The Member of Parliament (MP) for Agona East in the Central Region, Ms Queenstar Pokua Sawyerr, has organised a programme to sensitise her constituents on the Ebola epidemic.

She has, thus, become the first MP to sensitise her constituents on the dreaded disease.

As part of the programme, she gathered at Agona Kwanyarko last Thursday 257 senior high school students whose school fees she pays under the Maame Pokua Fee Programme (MPFP), to educate them on the disease and provided them with sanitisers.

Two doctors and three reverend ministers were invited to speak to the students about the causes, mode of transmission and symptoms of Ebola. The students were also schooled on why and how they should lead a good moral life.

Ms Sawyerr, popularly called Maame Pokua, advised the students not to take their education for granted.

“I am paying your fees as a way of helping you to acquire knowledge and skills for responsible adult life, so study to justify my objectives,” she urged.

The MP advised the students to avoid the situation where most of them thought vacation was a free period during which they could avoid studies and indulge in all sorts of vices.

“While on vacation, help with activities at home; but study more, avoid places that would get you into trouble and sleep early to get enough rest,” she admonished the students.

Ms Sawyerr, who is the Deputy Central Regional Minister, told the students that President John Dramani Mahama “will surely roll out his programme of compulsory and progressive free education, to ease parents of the burden of paying school fees.”

She also told them that “Agona East will fulfil every promise the President gave them during his campaign period, but only over time.”

At the end of the programme, Maame Pokua distributed 20 cartons of hand sanitisers to the students and the guests present.

The Adontenhene of the Agona Nsaba Traditional Area, Nana Kofi Agyekum, graced the occasion with his presence.
