Hon. Alex Tetteh Djornobuah, the Second Deputy Majority Whip and Member of Parliament for Sefwi-Akontombra, has expressed optimism that the Supreme Court give a final ruling on the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin’s, declaration of four parliamentary seats vacant, about a week ago.
He believes a final ruling from the Supreme Court will prevent a repeat of the occurrence of the last sitting before the Speaker adjourned the House Sine Die.
During the last parliamentary session before the adjournment, the majority seats were occupied by the minority caucus in Parliament resulting in chaos in the chamber leading to a peaceful walkout.
The controversy stems from the Speaker’s decision to declare the seats vacant, which the Supreme Court stayed. Despite this, the Minority continues to assert their majority status in Parliament.
The NPP caucus in Parliament argues that the suspension of parliamentary sittings due to the dispute is delaying serious government business, which has warranted recall of Parliament.
The Sefwi-Akontombra lawmaker expressed confidence that the Supreme Court will soon make a final determination, which he believes will resolve the issue of the vacant seats and potentially ease tensions in Parliament.
Alex Tetteh Djornobuah said, “the court process will start from Friday, and if you look at the order from the Supreme Court, it ordered the Speaker and the Parliament as an institution to respond to the order."
“And we believe that before the 7 days will elapse, the court will do justice to whatever the NDC is claiming. We cannot force the court, but we’re praying that they will do deal with the matter as soon as practicable.”
Speaking on Okay FM’s 'Ade Akye Abia' programme with Kwame Nkrumah Tikese on Thursday, October 24, the lawmaker reiterated that, it is paramount for Speaker to recall Parliament because there are some government business that have to be completed.
"There is a bill that deals with tax exemption for companies under the 1D1F programme. This will help the companies to employ more people thereby reducing the surge in unemployment. We haven’t been able to approve that bill. This amongst other bills is the reason for our recall of parliament,” he emphasised.
