National Democratic Congress (NDC) faithful yesterday thronged the Dunia Cinema at Nima in Accra to watch the distribution of motorbikes and bicycles to delegates, ahead of the July 8-10 watershed congress of the party to pick a flagbearer for the 2012 elections.
Although the limited number of items- 10 motorcycles and 5 bicycles- were meant for delegates, as DAILY GUIDE gathered, others from the party, upon the arrival of the truck and expecting that there could be other items for them, also turned up in their numbers.
The anxiety of the party faithful was heightened when the items were offloaded at about 4.00pm from the Kia truck with registration number GR 3477V.
With the inscription, Donated by Dr. Mustapha Ahmed on the motorbikes, some observers at the scene whispered that the marking was only a ruse or cover-up of a massive bribing effort to woo more delegates to the side of Mills.
Daily Guide was told by another group at the location that the items are meant for ward coordinators of the party and not delegates, a claim which appears to be a figment of a bigger picture as the area has only six wards.
Claims of distribution of assortment of items to delegates including motorbikes and golden handshakes of GH4000 to each delegate by President Mills representatives across the country were made by Michael Teye Nyaunu, co-coordinator of the Nana Konadu campaign.Such claims have been debunked by the Mills boys in a growing trading of accusations.
But a month to the NDC congress, 10 delegates in the East Ayawaso constituency in Accra are riding home brand new motorbikes under the guise of a donation from the constituency MP.
The recent picking of nomination forms by President Mills, which brought business to a standstill in Accra, left many wondering just how much had gone into the movement of people from all the constituencies of the country.
The June 4 activity today at the Jubilee Park in Kumasi could be a platform for ex-President Jerry John Rawlings to descend on President Mills governance style, especially the moves by his campaign team to capture the heights in the ongoing struggle to win the flagbearership of the party with cash.
Continuously speaking against President Millss administration, Mr. Rawlings said earlier that he would reserve his thoughts for today.
He has thrown his weight behind his wifes bid to lead the NDC in 2012 and in a bid by the two camps to outdo each other, money and mudslinging are being employed to gain higher grounds, ahead of the July engagement in Sunyani.
