Deputy Information Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa says the New Patriotic Party (NPP) should be licking their wounds because they have been exposed to be constantly engaging in unnecessary politicization of issues brought to the fore.
He said this in response to a press statement the NPP issued accusing the Mills government of failing to aid efforts to combat famine in Somalia.
Speaking on Asempa FM on Monday, Mr. Ablakwa refuted claims that the pledge to Somalia was delayed.
He explained that the pledging conference was held on the 25th of August so the NPP�s statement which was issued just over the weekend when the conference was over, was a fabrication. �They are just rushing to engage in petty politics and if they have been exposed they should be licking their wounds,� he stressed.
Mr. Ablakwa added that the NPP had the right, as a leading opposition party, to make checks with the African Union (AU) or with the Foreign Ministry to update itself about the situation in Somalia but failed to do so, and rather resorted to reading politics into the issue even when lives are being lost in Somalia.
According to the Deputy Minister, Ex-President Rawlings is a special envoy to Somalia and has been receiving support from the government in order to find lasting solution to the crisis there.
He said apart from a pledge of $500,000, the government has also indicated it will help in providing humanitarian assistance as well.
