The New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP for Assin North, Kennedy Agyapong, has called on the party flagbearer, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to stay away from persons who will be mere stooges as he looks to select a running mate for the 2012 election.
According to the MP, it will be in Nana Addos own interest to have an independent minded running mate who will provide advice and critique where necessary.
The Globe newspaper on Tuesday published that two persons have been shortlisted for the position of running mate for Nana Addo.
They are former Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia and Deputy Majority Leader, Ambrose Dery.
However, speaking to Citi News the NPP firebrand stated no matter the choice Nana Addo makes, the issue of submissiveness of a running mate should not suffice.
The matter of submissiveness doesnt come in if you want a Vice Presidential candidate; what is important is competence. We need somebody who can comfortably and boldly suggest or come up with ideas...We dont want Vice Presidents who are going to be stooges because Nana the President has said and it is final such things would not be good for the party and the country, Hon. Agyapong said.
Agyapong, however, stated that he is not sure if any of the names rumoured to be in the offing for the running mate position have the quality to critique Nana Addo.
Meanwhile, Agyapong has stated he is unfazed by the NDCs use of money in their attempt to wrestle the constituency seat from him.
According to him, his achievements in the constituency coupled with his preparations for the election will let him retain the seat.
Reports indicate that the NDC parliamentary aspirant, Dr. Nana Kofi Blankson, is giving the outspoken NPP MP stiff competition for the seat with his campaign.
But Agyapong maintains no amount of money spent by the NDC could let him lose his seat.
