The Chairperson and Leader of the Convention People's Party (CPP), Samia Yaba Nkrumah, has asserted that irrespective of the decision by Dr. Paa Kwesi Nduom to sever ties with the party, the CPP remains resolute and will present a more credible candidate for the 2012 elections.

Dr. Nduom, on Wednesday, ditched the CPP when he declared unequivocally that he will not contest the CPP’s presidential primary when the party opens nominations for prospective candidates to vie for the flagbearership slot.

Addressing the media on a number of issues concerning the CPP and his personal political ambitions in Accra, Dr Nduom said he will contest the 2012 general elections on the ticket of a new political party.

But speaking in an interview with GTV, a confident Samia Nkrumah was emphatic that the CPP will not be affected in anyway by this latest development.

Recounting what occasioned the departure of Dr. Nduom from the CPP; Samia said, after the successful election of its national executive members in September, the party came to a consensus that its members needed to be better mobilized before going to congress to elect a flagbearer.

This decision, she said, obviously did not go down well with some members who preferred an early congress, thus resulting in their quitting the party.

Dr Paa Kwesi Nduom

“…I established my authority as a leader and chairman of the party and we said this cannot happen; it is not in the best interest of our party. This angered some people to the extent of leaving the party. The majority of us will remain…out of this, a stronger, more committed CPP will emerge…no longer will people be confused as to what we stand for. We will present a credible candidate. A candidate who will not be inconsistent with his or her pronouncement…” she said.

Even though some people are tempted to blame her for the exit of Dr. Nduom, the CPP Chairperson believes she is not the reason for his (Nduom’s) recent action, and encouraged party activists to stand firm since ‘the best is yet to come’.

“The majority of the people are behind me…(the NEC) has approved that we hold our congress in March to elect our flagbearer. Of course it is impossible for everyone to agree with me but the majority are behind me. Within our party, we are not individualistic, no individual is indispensable…We wish Dr. Paa Kwesi Nduom well in his future endeavors but we are strong and confident that this CPP will represent the aspirations of Ghanaians…we will not give up until we become decision makers for the good of all Ghanaians… We will emerge stronger…,” she added.
