Mills Has Inflicted Mortal Wounds On Ghana’s Fight Against Corruption

The Minority Leader, Hon. Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, has described President Mills' dismissal of the Attorney-General, Martin Amidu, as the infliction of "mortal wounds" on the country's fight against corruption.

His Excellency President John Evans Atta Mills on Thursday relieved Mr Martin Amidu of his post as Attorney-General and Minister of Justice with immediate effect.

According to a statement signed by the Chief of Staff, J. H Martey Newman, the decision is as a result of Mr Amidu’s misconduct at a meeting last Friday, January 13th, 2012 presided over by His Excellency.

“Mr Amidu’s behaviour is incompatible with acceptable standards expected of Ministers and Appointees of the President,” the statement partly read.

The letter conveying the President’s decision to relieve the A-G of his post, thanked him for services rendered to the country as member of his government.

But the Minority Leader argues that inasmuch as the President has the power to hire and fire, he still cannot fathom what occasioned the President's decision to dismiss someone bent on tackling graft in his administration considering his (Mills') stance on the subject of corruption.

Speaking in an interview on Citi FM’s Eye Witness News, Hon. Kyei Mensah Bonsu rhetorically asked why President Mills had to wait for 6 days before firing the Attorney-General if truly it was because of a “misconduct”.

“However, I am not too surprised…the only thing is; are we prepared to fight corruption? This is because what the President has done inflicts mortal wounds on Ghana’s effort to investigate and get rid of corruption…,” the Minority Leader added.
