2012 Elections: SPECIAL VOTING Ends

The special voting for Security Personnel and Electoral Commission staff who will be on duty on Election Day, December 7th, has ended in some selected polling centres in all the 275 constituencies across the country.

Polling stations for the special exercise were located at designated points including police stations and the headquarters of the Immigration, Fire Service, Prisons and the Military.

The exercise, according to PeaceFM's regional correspondents was largely peaceful and successful throughout the country, but scores of security personnel who turned up to vote in the special voting exercise today, were unable to do so because their names were missing from the EC's register.

Reports from some correspondents in the Greater Accra Region, the Western and the Volta Regions indicate that potential voters have been informed to return on Friday to exercise their franchise.

In the Ketu South constituency in the Volta Region, only police personnel had their names in the register. Some immigration officials said they could not vote at the Denu Police Station because their names were missing from the register.

At Sampa in the Jaman North District of the Brong Ahafo Region, some Immigration officers were angry at the EC for refusing to allow them to vote.

The Immigration officers, who are 25 in number and stationed at the boarder town, were turned away by electoral officers because their names could not be found in the voters’ register.

Also in the Western Region, several Immigration Officers are in danger of being disenfranchised after their names were not found in the EC’s register.

But the EC, through its Principal Public Relations Officer Sylvia Annor, has given the assurance that security officials who could not exercise their franchise because their names did not appear in the voters’ register will only be allowed to vote on December 7.
