National Youth Coordinator of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), Divine Nkrumah, wants National Security Agencies in the country to be allowed to operate independent of government interference.
According him, just as the Electoral Commission (EC) operates autonomously; various security agencies must also be given such privileges by government to operate.
He opines that once heads of security outfits in the country are appointed by the government of the day, their line of work becomes dubious.
Divine Nkrumah was reacting to the Police Order obtained through the law courts preventing a planned anti-corruption demonstration by the party last Tuesday.
Greater Accra Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Freeman Tetteh told Peace FM news that even though the police had discussions with officials of the party about why they are not in a position to provide them with security, the PPP appeared non-committal.
The Police said they were unable to provide protection for the exercise because of a National Security ban on public demonstrations.
But Divine Nkrumah claimed the banned was instigated by government to prevent the PPP from protesting against the Mahama led administration.
“National Security, for all we know are manipulated be government and politicians. We (PPP) are requesting that, with immediate effect, National Security should be made an independent body. Government should stop interfering in their affairs to prevent citizens’ interest.
“…We are not happy with their operations, if there is any bill, it should be passed so the National Security will be independent regardless which political party is in power,” he told Peace FM News.
