As the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Upper East Region looks forward to a peaceful and befitting funeral for the late Adams Mahama, the Regional Secretary, Cletus Ayambire, has declared that the party’s National Chairman, Paul Afoko and the General Secretary, Kwabena Agyepong, had still not been cleared to attend the funeral, scheduled for June 7.

His statement follows purported persistent calls by the youth of the party in the region and outside, as well as some family members, that the two national executives would not be entertained at the funeral.

Some five regional executive members, who were banned from attending the burial service, would also not be welcomed at the funeral on Sunday.

The five are the Reg. Organizer, Jerry Asamani; Reg. Youth Organizer, Bashiru Ibrahim; the Regional Nasara Coordinator, Mba Siita; the Second Vice Chairman, Osman Kunkunaba and the Women Organiser, Florence Sampokabila. They have reportedly not been seen anywhere near the party office since May 21, 2015.

Mr Cletus Ayambire has come under serious pressure from the party youth, especially in Bolgatanga and others outside the Upper East Region, following a DAILY GUIDE report on June 1, 2015, in which he (Cletus Ayambire) was reported to have said the National Chairman and the General Secretary were welcomed to the Upper East Region.

In that report, even though the Regional Secretary neither invited the party’s two national officers nor the five regional executives to the funeral of the late Adams Mahama, he has been criticized for endorsing Nana Akufo-Addo’s (the party’s standard bearer’s) call that Paul Afoko and Kwabena Agyepong should be allowed to play their mandated roles in the NPP at the head office and across the regions.

“I have not asked that the two national executives or the five regional executives should attend the funeral. If the flagbearer has asked that the National Chairman and the General Secretary be allowed to play their mandated roles in the party, what can I say? By this, I have not invited the National Chairman and the General Secretary to the funeral or the Upper East Region,” he explained.

Meanwhile, a member of the Upper East NPP communications team, Latif Salifu, has told Accra-based Atinka FM that the two national officers are not welcome to the funeral.

According to Latif, the family members of Adams Mahama are still traumatized and they “cannot sit and watch these two people sit at the funeral grounds.”
