Activities in the Talensi Constituency almost came to a halt yesterday, when the Vice President of Ghana, Kwesi Amissah-Arthur, joined the campaign train to market Benson Tongo Baba, the National Democratic Congress’ parliamentary candidate for the Talensi Constituency by-election scheduled for July 7.

Vice President Kwesi Amissah-Arthur assured the people of the Talensi Constituency that, government is committed to the development of the area and is doing everything possible to extend more development projects and programmes to the area to help improve their livelihoods.

He promised that the National Democratic Congress(NDC) will hold peaceful campaigns devoid of violence and personal attacks.

He called on members of the NDC in the Talensi Constituency, to put aside their differences and work hard to ensure that the party wins the by-election.

Later hundreds of NDC youth on motorbikes and in buses from Bolgatanga and adjoining communities made their way to Tongo to boost the morale of the Vice President and to give the Talensi NDC, some edge over their opponents.

Prior to the departure to Tongo, Vice President Amissah-Arthur had a closed door meeting with party executives in Bolgatanga, probably to settle some disputes within the NDC in the constituency, especially after the Deputy National Organizer Joseph Akamba, was alleged to have ruffled the feathers of some of the aspirants during the party’s primaries.

The NDC is bent on boosting its fortunes in the Talensi area and in the Upper East Region and is doing everything possible to win back the parliamentary seat. For many constituents, the candidate will only perform well due to the popularity of the NDC in the area.

The People’s National Convention Candidate, Dr. Michael Wombengo was still in the Eastern corridor of the constituency trying to ensure that the people over there translate their love for him into votes on July 7.

Even though not formally announced, information from the constituency hints that, some “smaller” political parties have decided to throw their weight behind the PNC candidate with the sole aim of ending the NDC and NPP dominance in the Constituency.
