The Minister for the Interior and Member of Parliament (MP) for Navrongo Central, Mr Mark Owen Woyongo, has said he is optimistic of retaining the parliamentary seat in the 2016 general election.
“Indications on the grounds have seen massive defections of supporters from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) into the folds of the National Democratic Congress which is a confident booster,” he stated.
He said 12 constituency executives of the NPP in Gian, 50 members from Punyoro and some from Nyangua and Nayagnia have defected from the NPP, citing the internal problems within that party and the massive infrastructural development of the NDC government.
He said there were massive projects going on in the constituency, especially with regard to the provision of water, and indicated that he had so far constructed 100 boreholes within the constituency.
Currently, a Turkish Group is in the municipality to construct 40 boreholes some of which will be fitted with hand pumps and some mechanised, he said.
He said a US$6 million Navrongo Town Water Improvement System was also in the pipeline to provide water for residents within the municipality and also a multi-million dollar treatment plant to bring water from the Tono Dam to Navrongo, Paga and Bolgatanga and their environs was before Cabinet.
"I decided to make the provision of water my priority because during the 2012 elections campaign, I promised women in my constituency that when voted as the MP, during my first term of office, no woman will have to walk more than one mile to look for potable water".
He said he had also cleared the Doba, Zakari-Kanwele and Yuusi dams of silt to provide water for dry season farming, as well as drinking water for animals and the construction of houses in those communities.
Mr Woyongo said he had also rehabilitated and provided toilet facilities, and baths for the Kolgo Health Post at a cost of GH¢150,000 to serve the Naga, Wunania and surrounding communities.
He said plans were in place to provide a similar facility in the east to expand and improve the Natugnia Health Post to serve Mayoro, Yua and some surrounding communities.
He said he had acquired 80 computers and laptops to be distributed to five senior and junior high schools within the constituency, adding that some schools have already benefited from previous donations.
From all these developments going on, Mr Woyongo predictedthat he would beat the parliamentary candidate of the NPP for Navrongo Central with a margin of 10,000 in 2016 as against the margin of 3,000 in the 2012 elections.
