Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the President-elect, has said the chieftaincy institution needs reform to make it more meaningful in our current governance system.
He said there is still an obstacle bars the active participation of traditional authorities in the governance of the country and his administration would work closely with traditional authorities to address this concern.
Nana Akufo Addo said it is the intention of his administration to reform the chieftaincy institution for traditional authorities to play effective roles in the governance system of the country.
Nana Akufo-Addo said this at a special meeting of the Upper West Regional House of Chiefs, held to thank the people of the region and to assure them of his preparedness and commitment to deliver on his campaign promises.
He said the revival and modernisation of agriculture, the industrialisation development effort, restructuring of Savannah Accelerated Development Authority and making it a genuine instrument of progress for the people in the northern part of Ghana would be pursued vigorously.
Nana Akufo-Addo said the provision of dams and other irrigation facilities would enable people in the communities to undertake all-year-round agricultural production to make the nation food sufficient.
He expressed concern that some neighbouring countries with less favourable climatic conditions have been able to modernise their agriculture sector and are now exporting vegetables and other produce.
He said Ghana could do it better and it was based on this that the NPP promised to provide dams in the communities for the people to put their energies and spare times into productive ventures to produce more for the society and for export.
Vice President elect, Alhaji (Dr) Mahamud Bawumia, National Women Organiser of the NPP, Afusah Atiko Adjaba, Ambrose Dery, Member of Parliament for Nandom, and Bugri Nabu, Northern Regional Chairman of the NPP among others accompanied Nana Akufo- Addo.

Is it because you did not read the story or you read but did not understand it? I am very surprised at your comments because the man was very clear and objective about the kind of reforms he intends to bring on board. The time for this false propaganda of a divisive NPP is over because that card you played did not help your course and I thought that you would have abandoned this long after the massive defeat you and your party NDC suffered from the thumbs of Ghanaians. Don't be blinded by your pain just take it to heart...after all when the NPP lost two previous elections the world did not come to an end. Please be objective for once.
I agree with Nana the chieftaincy institutions should be reformed. I think the council of state should be removed. The house of chiefs should be a higher body where all government operations should give accounts to. Even they should appoint some positions as the IGP.
I was very happy when I read the headline to this piece and was going to move on to read something else without comment, when 2 comments caught my eye. I usually love to respectfully disagree with people with different views without rubbishing either the idea or comment. But I believe we Ghanaians are at the point where we have to tell people when they are wrong. The reforms required in our chieftaincy institutions is long overdue. The relationship between government and our chieftaincy institutions should have been reviewed since the days of independence. The colonial government set up a system and a governance style that sort to undermine and marginalize our chiefs and the institution. This system weakened the Gold Coasters' ability to organize and present a united opposition to the British Colonial government. After independence our various governments have perpetuated these systems and style of governance either ignorantly or deliberately because it served their selfish or myopic ends. Our chieftaincy institutions need to be reformed to play a more effective role in the mobilization and development of our nation without getting immersed in partisan politics. With the right reforms the Chieftaincy institution can be self sufficient and strong enough to rebuff the selfish advances of some of our selfish politicians. Times have changed, and we as a people need to change accordingly but also hold on strong to the parts of our culture that define, unite, and inspire us to higher ideals. We should be very careful of the people who abhor or resist reforms and change just for the sake of it. We should be careful of anyone and everyone who caricatures anyone with fresh ideas and a vision that is different from theirs as the 'devil'. We have to begin to trust each other, but continue to verify without necessarily assigning ill motives to each others ideas. God bless our homeland Ghana, and make our nation great and strong.
Ye boboba, when NDC warned chiefs of the kind of person Nana is, they taught they were lying. Reform indeed, Ghana will soon cry.
This is beautiful, man with ideas,he is setting his direction .... The focus on agriculture ,education ,private, sector n the youth is a blow to thr neck. Keep thinking and actn creative n do reforms on chieftancy that's da only way you can seriously work with them . GOD bless you NANA ADDO.
Which kind of reform. Please leave our chieftancy alone because its not part of your mandate. Touch it and see what Ghana will turn into. Finish reforming your party before you cross to this area. Are you also going to share vehicles like Mahama did.
