Dr Sekou Nkrumah, son of Dr Kwame Nkrumah, has asked President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to allow Ghana’s first president’s role in the struggle for independence untouched.
President Akufo-Addo renewed the debate over whether Ghana should have founding fathers or a founding father while delivering his speech Monday to mark Ghana’s 60 independence anniversary.
According to him, the struggle for independence was started by members of the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC).He listed Joseph Boakye Danquah, Emmanuel Obetsebi-Lamptey, William Ofori-Atta, Ebenezer Ako-Adjei and Edward Akufo-Addo as the pioneers of the independence fight.
Mr Akufo-Addo added that it was when the UGCC leaders decided they needed a full-time general secretary that they brought in a younger nationalist in Mr Nkrumah.
“Soon thereafter, on 28th February, 1948, the notorious and senseless killings of three ex-servicemen, Sergeant Adjetey, Corporal Attipoe, and Private Odartey Lamptey... undoubtedly, quickened the pace of the independence movement,” he said.
This narrative of the president has not gone well with several Nkrumahists who believe he is re-writing history.
Dr Sekou Nkrumah, in a short letter addressed to the president, said: “Dear Nana Addo, I am with you in elevating 6th March to advance the interest of all Ghanaians as well as project all our heroes in a positive and dignified way so as to unite our dear country. However, I beg of you to leave 21st September for Nkrumah alone!
“I had my differences with the late Professor Mills but I stood with him in all humility for the honour he gave our first President Kwame Nkrumah in declaring his birthday a public holiday.”

21st september, is Nkrumah birth day and being the founder of the then Young Pioneer during the celebration time they will tell you today is founder's day; that is all and not a member of the founding fathers
WHAT IS THIS SMALL BOY CALLED SEKOU SAYING? WHAT DOES HE KNOW? IS IT TRUE OR FALSE THAT PAA GRANT, JB DANQUAH AND OTHERS OF THE UGCC INVITE KWAME NKRUMAH, HIS FATHER, TO COME AND TAKE UP THE SECRETARYSHIP OF THE UGCC? IS IT TRUE OR FALSE THAT NKRUMAH BROKE AWAY FROM THE UGCC TO FORM HIS CPP? THE GOES ON AND ON. SEKOU SHOULD BE HAPPY THAT HE WROTE HIS LETTER TO NANA ADDO IN A DEMOCRATIC ERA. IF IT WERE THE DAYS OF HIS FATHER NKRUMAH, HE WOULD HAVE BEEN LAVISHING AT THE NSAWAM PRISON THE MOMENT HE TOOK HIS PEN TO WRITE THOSE NWURA
TRUMP IS NOTED FOR HIS STATEMENT"I ALONE CAN FIX IT, THOUGH HE IS YET TO DO IT. DID NKRUMAH DID IT ALONE? DID HE START FROM NOTHING. NKRUMAH WAS NOT A MEMBER OF THOSE WHO INITIATED UGCC (UNITED GOLD COAST CONVENTION) LATER HE WAS INVITED TO BECOME A SECRETARY OF AN ORGANIZATION WHO HAD STARTED TO DEMAND FOR SELF-RULE OF GHANA. THESE ARE FACTS THAT NO ONE CAN CHANGED THEM. NKRUMAH BROKE AWAY TO FORMED CPP AND THEREFORE INTRODUCE MULTIPARTY SYSTEM INTO THE STRUGGLE FOR INDEPENDENCE. IT IS RATHER THE MULTIPARTY SYSTEM WHICH CONTAIN CHECK AND BALANCES IN GOVERNANCE THAT SPEED UP THE PROCESS FOR INDEPENDENCE. UNFORTUNATELY NKRUMAH ABOLISHED THE VERY SYSTEM THAT FACILITATE THE PROCESS TO OBTAIN INDEPENDENCE. BY ABOLISHING OF MULTIPARTY SYSTEM HE GENERATED THE CONDITION FOR COUP D'ETAT AND THE OVERTHROW OF HIS CPP GOVERNMENT. NANA ONLY STATED THE FACTS OF HISTORY. MANY GREAT MEN HAVE SUFFERED THE SAME FATE OF NKRUMAH ANYTIME THEY IGNORE TO PROMOTE THE VERY PRINCIPLES WHICH BRING THEM TO GREATNESS.
THIS MAN KORAAAA, WHEN DID HE REALISED NKRUMAH IS HIS FATHER?#GOTOHELL!!! TELL THE WORLD UR STORY ABOUT UR FATHER "N" LEAVE THE PRESIDENT ALONE OK.
I am PanAfrikanist and Nkrumaist beyond compare and I am Nkrumaist and PanAfrikanist with no apologies.I have President Akufo Addos speech in celebration of the 60th anniversary of GhanaS Independnce won for us by the Osagyefo and honestly I dont see anything Nana Addo said that distorts history of our independence struggle or negative to Nkrumah.Fact and truth is there were others like Paa Grant and J.B. Danquah who started the struggle for our independence before Nkrumah was invited to join. The Osagyefo did a masterful job in given us our independence within the shortest possible time but he did not start the struggle or struggled alone. So to me President Akufo A\ddo was recognising and giving credit to others who also contributed greatly to the struggle for our independence.I see nothing wrong with that.If true Nkrumaist would accept others as part of the struggle for our independence and accept that Ghana has founding fathers and not a founding father it would make rather Nkrumah bigger and help in our reconciliation. And those that were also behind bomb throwing at Kulungungu and made several threat on the lige of Osagyefo and banned the CPP after the over throw of his government, that history should also be brought to light.CPP and the NPP should then accept their historical mistakes and apologise to each and reconcile the nation and try to start a new Ghana for the betterment and upliftment of all Ghanaians both the current and future generation. For those that called or calls Nkrumah a dictator are just joking or yet to mature because in the history of Ghanaian politics we have had only on true dictator and that was and still is Jerry John Rawlings.Did Nkrumah kiled, put people under curfew or ruled by the Ghana? Thanks to Prof Adu Boahene for breaking the culture of silence and helping Ghanaians to discover their voice again under Rawlings nightmare dictatorship and for how long the Jerry ruled Ghana?Nkrumah if he was a dictator then he was positive, patriotic and benevolent dictator - that kind of dictatorship which built Singapore,Maylaysia,China,Japan,Taiwan and others. We have not have that kind love and caring leadership since.I hope President Akufo Addo learns a lot from Nkrumahs leadership, foresight, can do spirit and dynamism to lead our beloved nation from now on into the distant future. But look who is talking is that Sekou???Sekou do you now call the Osagyefo your father and therefore you are proud of him to defend his integrity?Truly small boys are young.
T hese are some of the things that happen and I feel sad as a Ghanaian. I believe there are professors and highly qualified people in this country who call themselves, historians, teachers of politics, politicians, and so on and so forth. This is the time for them to straighten the history of this country, especially relating to our independence struggle. Let them come out boldly and stop sitting on the fence. Else, the politicians will continue to pollute the system and confuse everybody. We are waiting for you. Thank You.
JB and Busia wrote to the Queen to deny us independence. they wanted to Kill Nkrumah so he was also protecting his life. This Danquah Busia tradition is a curse to Ghana. Nkrumah is who we know
I agree with you, C. K. Inkumsah. the role and memory of the 'others' should not be obliterated.
SO WHAT IS SEKOU SAYING ? WHY DO PEOPLE LIKE SEKOU THINK PROJECTING THE ROLE OF THE OTHERS IN THE INDEPENDENCE STRUGGLE MEANS DIMINISHING THE ROLE OF KWAME NKRUMAH. ? WHAT ARE YOU GUYS HIDING AND WHAT ARE YOU GUYS AFRAID OF WHEN THE TRUTH IS TOLD.? KWAME NKRUMAH HOLDS A SPECIAL AND UNRIVALED ROLE WHEN WE SPEAK OF INDEPENDENCE BUT FOR GOODNESS SAKE LET US NOT OBLITERATE THE MEMORY OF THE 'OTHERS"
