Former Member of Parliament for Nanton Constituency in the Northern Region of Ghana, Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed says the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission is being attacked because she decided to fight corruption.
“Afari Gyan was never interested in the daily operations of the commission; his focus was on elections and so the other operations were not handled by him…now you have Mrs Charlotte Osei …she came and took particular interest in many things Dr Afari Djan was not so much interested in…” he said.
Madam Charlotte Osei has been on the receiving end of an avalanche of criticisms since her appointment as the Chairperson of the commission. She is currently involved in an impeachment case which started from her workplace.
Chief Justice, Sophia Akuffo, initiated what may be described as a possible impeachment process when she empaneled a five-member committee last month to look into allegation of corruption against the EC chairperson.
The inquisitorial committee, whose members are yet to be made public, is expected to investigate Mrs Osei, together with her two deputies, Georgina Opoku-Amankwa, who is in-charge of Corporate Services, and Amadu Sulley, in charge of Operations.
A couple of months ago, some unnamed EC staff petitioned President Akufo-Addo to trigger an impeachment process against Charlotte Osei.
The accusation against Charlotte Osei included directing of GH¢3.9 million to partition an office, her receipt of a Toyota Land Cruiser from the Mahama government, expending about $14 million when the Public Procurement Authority had authorised her to use only $7.5 million.
Mrs Osei launched her own attack, drawing in the two deputies.
Commenting on the issue, the former MP believes Madam Charlotte Osei’s woes would not have started if she had decided not to thread on dangerous grounds.
“Afari Gyan was never interested in the daily operations of the commission; his focus was on elections and so the other operations were not handled by him…now you have Mrs Charlotte Osei: when the woman was made the electoral commissioner, she should have known that the very people who were bent on becoming the commissioners and never had it, will fight you. She came and took particular interest in many things Dr Afari Gyan was not so much interested in; the daily operations and that is where the chop chop is. She took particular interest because where she worked (at NCCE), she knew what was going on at the Electoral Commission. But she should have also known that coming to fight corruption, you are bound to face obstacles…the woman should have known and that is where I think she was a bit naïve…”

So what at all is ndc supposes to gain from this fraudulent charlotte osei and almost all ndc members defend the indefensible why??? I not comprehend why ndc is fighting nail n tooth for this fraudulent charlotte osei, any ndc member who defend charlotte osei MUST be arrested immediately bcos he/she might know something about those inflated contracts fraudulent charlotte osei signed. How can fraudulent charlotte osei fight corruption with bigger corruption? FRAUDULENT CHARLOTTE OSEI MUST GO PERIOD.
In fact I wouldn't call her determination to fight corruption in the EC as naiv. As a leader of an Organisation or if you like,of a very important Independent Institution in terms of the constitution and governance, you would definitely have to appreciate the responsibility to get things right be it at the risk of your Leadership Position or not. The main objective is to get right things done to the best of your ability and courage of your conviction regardless of the consequences. And that is what come with good Leadership. If indeed, Dr Afri Gyan got away with the problems like the way you evaluate it to him, then I believe, that reeked of irresponsibiliy and poor Leadership. On the other hand I could comfortably lead to perceive that Charotte Osei amoung other things had a hidden agenda of which she needed the coorperation of the two Depuities to get NDC win the election. That clearly, couldn't work because they were at loggerheads, as it's yet very obvious.
MRS. OSEI BLAME YOURSELF, YOU TALK AS IF YOU ARE A GOD IN OUR LAND. WOMEN ARE BORN TO HAMBLE BUT TO ME YOU ARE NOT. NATURAL LAW IS JUDGING YOU
Oh, so now it is not the NPP that wants her our? Is that what NDC is saying now? This was clear from the beginning for ALL to see except the incompetent NDC. Incompetent EVEN in opposition!
Corruption has been a cancer in our government and somebody trained as a lawyer and come to a Government to challenge corruption then.she is taken as a stumbling block . How can we develop if we fail to fight corruption head on . If it is fighting that they are taking her on then we would see what Supreme Court would do.
Pls stop decieving yourself. Have you forgotten she confirmed receiving V8 from mahama's presidency?
Lame defense. Find a better one. How do you justify spending almost twice what Procurement Authority mandates? Is it corruption or misunderstanding of the relationship between EC and Procurement Authority (incompetence). Both reasons are not desirable qualities of a good EC Chair.
She is just disrespectful and pompous...thats her trait.she will will be impeached no matter what.
