The Managing Editor of the New Crusading Guide newspaper, Kweku Baako Jnr has expressed excitement over the appointment of Martin Amidu as the country’s first Special Prosecutor.
Anti-corruption crusader Martin Amidu has been appointed as the country’s first Special Prosecutor pending parliamentary approval; a decision that has been welcomed by many.
The Office of the Special Prosecutor marks the fulfilment of a major campaign promise of Nana Akufo-Addo in the run-up to the 2016 elections aimed at fighting corruption.
President Akufo-Addo has already signed into law the bill setting up the Special Prosecutor office after it was approved by Parliament in November 2017.
Contributing to a panel discussion on Joy FM’s newsfile programme, Kweku Baako described the appointment saying: “it was a political masterstroke”
“He’s just fit for purpose…this is not an easy office…he’s not a perfect person; his recent record is critical; the independence of character…I think the president took a decision driven by a strategic thinking…” he added.
Vetting
Mr Amidu will appear before the Appointments Committee of Parliament to be vetted in the coming days following his appointment.
As a word of advice, Kweku Baako has urged him to ‘prepare himself’ because he is going to face a tense 'grilling'.
“I suspect there might be real grilling at the vetting…he must prepare himself for some ordeal but I believe he’s got the stamina and capacity to endure the storm” he said.
