Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has accused the Minority in Parliament of “undermining the pillars of governance” after they deliberately staged a walkout moments after the President, His Excellency Nana Akufo-Addo entered the chamber to address the House.
According to him, their action is a sign of ‘indiscipline’ and urged all to condemn it.
“We are setting very bad precedents in our democracy that have the ability to undermine the pillars of our governance,” he tweeted.
Adding that, “We need to be very careful not to destroy the things that uphold the state.”
Members of the Minority side of Parliament staged a walkout of the August House just after President Nana Addo entered.
The side earlier announced they will be boycotting the sitting and made their way out just as the national anthem ended.
They moved out repeating a part of the anthem that says 'and help us to resist oppressors rule with all our will and might forever more'.
But members of the majority side sent off their colleagues with chants of 'away' as well as 'bye bye'.
No Vacant Seat
As if that was not amusing enough, some members of the Majority then went over to fill up the seats vacated by the Minority caucus.
Black Attire
Earlier, the Minority had indicated their resolve to don “black attires” to express the ‘real state of the nation’.
Reason For Boycotting SONA 2020
The members of the minority side earlier expressed frustration about the delay of their share of the MP's Common Fund for the third quarter of 2019, as they say it is delaying the execution of projects in their constituencies.
According to them, the delay is a deliberate attempt to deprive them of working effectively and consequently competing fairly with their opponents, especially when the general election is some months away.
