The Dean of the School of Performing Arts of the University of Ghana, Legon, Professor Kofi Agyekum, popularly known as Opanyin Agyekum has thrown his weight behind the Electoral Commission (EC) to compile a new voters' register, as long as their actions are backed by law.
The Electoral Commission (EC) has made calls for a new voters' register to eliminate unqualified names from the register.
The Commission is further seeking an amendment of the Constitutional Instrument (C.I) 91 in the legislative house which will make the Ghana card and Ghanaian passport the only legal documents for the registration exercise.
The EC added it will allow applicants without the two requirements to participate in the exercise but on conditions in order not to disenfranchise eligible electorates during the general elections.
''An applicant who does not have the Ghana card or passport may resort to obtaining two guarantors to facilitate their registration and therefore the exclusion of the Voter ID as a requirement will not lead to suppression of votes',' the Commission said.
"The Electoral Commission wishes to assure all stakeholders at all levels of its determination to deliver free, fair and credible Presidential and Parliamentary Elections on December 7, 2020 as mandated by law,” the EC added.
Opanyin Agyekum has urged the EC not to succumb to opposition but stay focused on what it seeks to achieve.
''They should be focused. If the law permits what they've set their minds to do, they should go ahead with it. If we follow the mouths of people, we might not even eat...They should do it with a clear conscience because if your conscience is clear, nothing a person says can harm you. We, citizens, should also understand that we have no other country apart from Ghana'', Opanyin Agyekum stated on 'Kokrokoo' on Peace FM.

THE MOTION TO REJECT THE C.I. TO USE THE GHANA CARD AND PASSPORT AS THE BASIC DOCUMENTS OF IDENTIFICATION FOR THE ELECTION REGISTRATION IS ABSURDDD AND OBNOXIOUSS PROPOSAL BY THE MINORITY. GHANA IS NOT AN ISLAND. IT IS TIME FOR US TO DO THINGS TO MEET INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS. IT IS THE PRACTICE IN THE PROGRESSIVE NATION TO HAVE ONE COMMON DOCUMENT OF IDENTIFICATION BY WHICH ANY OTHER ID CARD- BANK, EMPLOYMENT, PROFESSION, DRIVERS LICENSE, STUDENT, VOTER'S ID OR ANY OTHER IS CONNECTED. NO ID CARD FOR WHATEVER PURPOSE CAN BE OBTAINED WITHOUT THIS BASIC COMMON ID FOR THEIR CITIZENS. WITH THE INTRODUCTION OF GHANA CARD AS THE COMMON DOCUMENT OF IDENTIFICATION, EVERY ID IN GHANA MUST BE CONNECTED TO IT. THE VOTER'S ID CARD MUST BE CONNECTED TO THE GHANA CARD. LIKE IT EXISTS ELSEWHERE, THE GHANA CARD THEREFORE MUST ALWAYS CONTAIN FEATURES THAT INCLUDE THE INFORMATION ASCERTAINING THE ORIGIN, THE EXISTENCE, RELATIONS, RESIDENTIAL OR PHYSICAL ADDRESS AND ANY OTHER ESSENTIAL DATA OF THE PERSON. THE IDEA OF SOMEBODY TO VOUCH FOR THOSE WHO DO NOT HAVE THE GHANA CARD SHOULD NOT BE ENTERTAINED FOR LONG. EVERY GHNANAIAN OR EVERY FOREIGNER QUALIFIED TO BE RESIDENT IN GHANA SHOULD HAVE THE GHANA CARD FOR ANY TRANSACTION THAT REQUIRES TO ESTABLISH THE IDENTITY OF THE PERSON. THE MOTION OF THE OPPOSITION AGAINST THE CI IS UNCALLEDD FOR. IT IS BACKWARDD. IT LACKS ANY SENSEE OF DIRECTION INTO THE BETTER FUTURE . THE MOTION IS ANTI-PROGRESS. IT IS OBNOXIOUSS AND ABSURDD. IT DOESN'T DESERVES TO BE CONSIDERED. IT MUST BE REJECTED.
Hmmmmmmm, what is wrong with not using the Old voter ID to register for the new voters ID? If you used the old voter ID to do the new voter registration, it will help a lot and speed up with the new voter ID, a lot of people who died will never turn-up to register.
Professor Agyekum cannot be more intelligent than the majority of Ghanaians including Civil society, political parties and well meaning scholars such as Professor Atsu Ayehs who are Speaking against the vote rigging schemes of the Non Patriotic party.
Professor Agyekum is a sycophant seeking attention from his kokofu government for a political appointment - an Akan remains fraudulent and dishonest whether he is a king, a pastor, a lawyer, judge or a professor because they are morally bankrupt by nature. They shall be known by their fruits.
Thought this man is full of wisdom. Anyway, it's all good. As the saying goes, trust no human being cos you would never know what is in his/her head. Only God is trustworthy.
Massa, don't lose your respect by getting involve in this brouhaha on new voter register. A lot of Ghanaians respect you views, but as soon as they perceive you are sounding political, you may end up erasing all the love they have for you.
