The largest opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) says they will not be part of Wednesday’s meeting between political parties and the Electoral Commission (EC).
The meeting which is at the instance of the EC is part of stakeholder discussions towards the compilation of a new voters' register for the 2020 elections.
Speaking on Okay FM's 'Ade Akye Abia' programme, the deputy General Secretary of the party, Peter Boamah Otokunor said officials of the party will not risk their lives to attend the meeting in a ‘small room’ in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We can’t be part of that IPAC meeting, we think that it is an illegitimate IPAC meeting. If it is by way of passing information to us there are several communication channels to reach us. They can write to us, that is better than going to risk ourselves in that small room.
“We have said that if they want to have a proper meeting they should go for a bigger auditorium like the COCONUT Groove hotel where they used to go for such a meeting. We think that there is a sinister motive behind this whole agenda, we are not participating and we are demanding that this meeting is postponed until a befitting venue is decided,” he said.
Request for training manual
Meanwhile, the party has requested from the Electoral Commission a training manual for voters registration officials ahead of the planned exercise.
Confirming a letter signed by the General Secretary of the party, Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketia, he explained that it is the responsibility of the Electoral Commission to provide for the political parties the training manuals and any other document the political parties may need going into the general elections.
A letter to the EC Chairperson signed by the party’s General Secretary Johnson Aseidu Nketia read: “The National’ Democratic Congress (NDC) has become aware of an ongoing nationwide training exercise being conducted by the Electoral Commission to prepare its staff to be deployed for the conduct of voter registration prior to the 2020 General Elections”.
It stressed: “as a major stakeholder whose agents have important functions to perform during the exercise to ensure its credibility, we are by this letter officially requesting the commission to supply the NDC with the above-named documents and any other material that would enable the party to prepare our agents adequately for same. Thank you.”

Article 6 to 10 of the Constitution of Ghana define who a Citizen is. Again Citizenship Act, 2000 says a person acquires citizenship of Ghana by BIRTH, MARRIAGE, ADOPTION, OR NATURALIZATION. The Constitution of Ghana which is the Supreme Law, and the Citizenship Act 2000 did not mention Ghana Card or Passport as a proof of Citizenship. Going by the Citizenship Act then; a Birth Certificate, Marriage Certificate, Adoption Certificate or Naturalization Certificate are valid documents which show whether or Not a Person is a Citizen of Ghana. No where in the law does it say Ghana Card or Ghana Passport would be proof of citizenship. So denying a Ghanaian Citizen who is of a sound mind and has attained the age of 18 years the right to register and vote by virtue of the fact that he does not have a Ghana Card or Ghanaian Passport is null and void, and Unconstitutional.
The impudence of a failed, embarrassing and dying political party.
At long last my prayer is getting answered by the day. Its good that you are not taking part in this meeting. Please go a step further to also remove your name from the EC's list of registered political parties so that eventually there will be sanity in Ghana. Indeed the NDC is Ghana's biggest nightmare.
NDC SHOULD KNOW THAT THE ESSENCE OF ANY PARTY IS TO CONTRIBUTE TO BUILD A NATION AND NOT JUST THAT PARTY. NATION BUILDING IS LIKE A FAMILY LIFE. YOU DON'T ALWAYS GET WHAT YOU WANT BUT FOR THE SAKE OF FAMILY COHESION AND THE COMMON GOOD OF ALL MEMBERS YOU SACRIFICE YOUR SELFISH INTEREST FOR THE COMMON INTEREST. NDC NEEDS OPENMINDED AND MATUREDD PERSONS WHO UNDERSTAND AND APPRECIATE THIS REALITY TO LEAD THE PARTY. IT LOOKS LIKE THE CURRENT NDC LEADERSHIP LACKS THIS SPIRIT OF SACRIFICE AND RESPECT FOR FAIRNESS FOR THE GOOD OF ALL. THE CASES OF HUGE CORRUPTION IN THE RECENT PAST ADMINISTRATION, INCLUDING AIR BUS, STOLEN OF THOUSANDS GOVERNMENT CARS, BANK FRAUDS AND MANY OTHERS CANNOT BE CONSIDERED IN ISOLATION. THEY REVEAL THE SELFISHH SPIRIT OF THE CROP OF LEADERSHIP THAT EXIST IN NDC TODAY. THE NDC UNRULYY POSTURE TOWARDS EC IS ONLY A TRUE REFLECTION OF THEIR LEADERSHIP QUALITIES. NOBODY CAN FORCE THEM TO GO TO IPAC MEETING. MAY BE THEY FEEL ASHAMED TO DO SO AFTER THEIR IRRATIONALLL ATTACKS ON EC. MAY BE THEY DO NOT HAVE ANY TANGIBLE CONTRIBUTION TO MAKE. WHAT EVER IT IS IPAC WOULD BE HELD WITH OR WITHOUT THEM AND THE DECISIONS OF IPAC WOULD BE BINDING AND IMPLEMENTED.
Is it not funny? NDC!! this is a party that defended the EC under Charlotte Osei. What has happened to them now?
Where NDC is going now is totally embarrassing. You are invited to a meeting and you say the room is too small, and so for that matter, you will not attend. Next time it will be too far, or too hot, or too cold etc. Meanwhile, these are the same people who organise press conferences every now and then. I think the NDC leadership have to rethink their strategy. Anyway, attending an IPAC meeting is not compulsory, so all is fine.
