Governance Lecturer at the Central University, Dr. Benjamin Otchere-Ankrah, has expressed disappointment in government for her treatment of teachers in the country.
Four teacher unions have declared a nationwide strike over government’s inability to meet the deadline for their demands for the payment of Cost of Living Allowance (COLA).
The unions include the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT).
The strike action follows the expiration of a June 30 deadline the unions gave government.
Speaking on Peace FM's "Kokrokoo" programme Thursday morning, Dr. Benjamin Otchere-Ankrah called on the government to address the concerns of the teachers with regard to a better remuneration for them.
He couldn't fathom why teachers are always sidelined despite their instrumental role in shaping the society.
"I am a proud teacher. I will always associate with teachers. Teacher's salaries are not good," he stated and asked "have you seen teachers residing at Trassaco, Villagio and other posh residences?"
Dr. Otchere-Ankrah exclaimed; "Is it a crime to be a teacher?"

It is time teachers are made to go through annual performance evaluations, all of them, and their supervisors put under school administration boards, at most 3 members, elected from the local electoral area with no pay, to appoint and a supervise the headmasters for renewable 5 year terms. That way we can begin to hold teachers accountable for their instructional delivery and not hold the whole country ransom over pittance that have nothing to do with their core duties.
Can’t the teachers consider the current situation of the country? At least the government continued to pay your salaries during the covid time that you were not working. Going on strike because of allowances at a time the country is facing economic crisis can’t be a good decision. You guys are rather sabotaging your own government.
Sometimes I wonder how some of these professors and doctors reason. You are talking about COLA, why don't you talk about camphor. Ask yourself, it not these same teachers who sat home for over seven months during the covid-19 and received full salaries? Please do not support these ungrateful organization. Who is not suffering ? Is it only teachers. If you do not have anything to say then keep quiet.
I want someone to help me answer this question. Was COLA in existence long before or it's a current happening? If it was in existence before then, they deserve it because others have benefited. On the other hand, if it is a current happening then, the teachers are not being fair because everybody including other government workers are also affected by the current situation or happenings in the country and they might also want same which will not augur well for the government. They should at least consider the plight of the students. I think the government will not forget them when things get better. This is my take.
