The Member of Parliament for Mpraeso, Davis Ansah Opoku, has said that it is the turn of New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential hopeful Alan Kyerematen to be the flagbearer of the party.
According to him, Alan has sacrificed a lot for the growth and unity of the NPP, and he deserves to be given the opportunity to lead the party.
Speaking in an Oyerepa TV interview monitored by GhanaWeb, Ansah Opoku added that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo himself categorically stated that Alan will take over from him when he (Alan) stepped out for the second round of the 2007 presidential primaries.
“Members of the NPP know that it is the turn of Alan Kyerematen. Members of the NPP know that the greatest sacrifice that has ever been made in the party was by Alan Kyerematen.
“In 2007, when the party was at a standstill, when the party was at a crossroads, out of nowhere, Alan said he will not contest in the second round of the NPP presidential primaries and he pledged his support to Nana Addo. This is the greatest sacrifice anybody can make for the NPP.
“This was why the then-candidate Akufo-Addo at Legon (NPP Congress) singled out Alan, whom he described as the young man who has given him a run for his money... and prophesied into the life of Alan that he will be the party’s leader after him (Akufo-Addo),” he said in Twi.
He added that what Akufo-Addo said should still hold and questioned whether the president has now changed his mind.
Alan Kyerematen is expected to face stiff competition from the likes of Assin Central MP Ken Agyapong, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the former Food and Agriculture Minister, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto and ex- Mampong MP Francis Addai-Nimoh for the flagbearership position of the NPP.

Yes, Akuffo Addo might have said Allan will take over after his (Akuffo Addo's) tenure. Question is, can Akuffo Addo veto for Allan to be the NPP's presidential candidate without a contest? We are in a democracy, if Allan is popular, let the delegates decide. The Nigerians have a saying thus " Meat that has fat will prove it by the heat of fire ". A presidential candidate for the NPP in 2024 is not the issue. The issue has to do with how the NPP will go into the elections considering the level of disappointment, neglect, regret and apathy within the ordinary NPP supporter. I keep saying if it were about power and money, John Mahama would have won the 2016 elections after all he was the incumbent with state resources at his disposal but if lost miserably. You know why? He failed to get the required number of human beings to cross the 50% + 1 mark. This should tell you that incumbency is no longer an advantage in Ghana politics. The NPP appointees should rather look for human beings and not money if they want to break the 8. From every indication the current appointees have not learnt any lessons from the NDC's defeat in 2016. 2024 doesn't look favourable for the NPP looking at the the level of disappointment among Ghanaians and more so the ordinary NPP supporter. The appointees are behaving like there will not be elections again. Like the proverbial vulture, the rains will definitely come, when it's beaten heavily by the rain a nest comes to mind when it's too late. Currently the NPP has no nest to fall on when it rains. As for the rains they will come in several millimeters. Hmmmm
Ansah Opoku Alan did what in 2007? Did he not come back to contest in the subsequent presidential race? Allow the contest of ideas to continue. May the best man win the presidential race. I have unbridled love for Bawumia and I pray for him always.
Why do you take turns? Not competence anymore? Oh Africa (Ghana)
