Highlife musician Lucky Mensah has revealed that the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) bought the rights to his ‘Nkratuo’ album in order to prevent the sale of the songs on it.
According to him, the ruling party made the move because they suspected one of the songs on the album was targeted at the party and the then President Professor John Mills (late).
The 'Nkratuo' song which was perceived as an attack on the Mills administration was laced with innuendos and mockery of the government. The song became an instant hit as political opponents saw it as a volt-face of a musician who had sung the praises of the NDC going into the 2012 election.
Speaking to Bola Ray and Anita Erskine on the Starr Drive Wednesday, the ‘Odo loose’ hitmaker said even though his song was not targeted at the NDC, he feels let down by the party.
“The song was not targeted at the NDC. I meant no harm at all but they perceived it as an attack on the government. I later received a call from a leading member of the party who offered to buy the album so I don’t get to sell it.
“So I met up with him and they paid for the entire album. So that album was not sold on the market,” he stated.
He added that he is unwilling to sing for the ruling party again, even though he will not rule out the possibility of singing for opposition parties.
