Veteran actor ‘Kohwe’ known in private life as Kofi Laing in a passionate appeal, has urged leaders of the country and the public to care for the plight of old actors who through their gift brought laughter and eased tension in many homes.
According to him, what they did cannot be quantified, considering the positive impacts it brought in many homes and the country as a whole.
Speaking to The Spectator newspaper, he said, some of his colleagues died as paupers because there was no assistance from anywhere.
For him, in their days, the movie industry was not rewarding in monetary terms, and it was against that backdrop, those in the helm of affairs must care about their plight in old age.
He said it was unfortunate that when they are in need, they were left to their fate, adding that the worst of the maltreatment was that they were always denied movie roles to fend for themselves.
“Don’t wait for me to die, before you pay glowing tribute to me for my wonderful contribution, your tribute will be meaningless because it will not bring me back to life,” he said.
He said, now that he was alive, if there was any support, it was time to locate him and put smiles on his face rather than to wait for him to die before doing so.
According to him, instead of producers using veterans to play certain roles, they rather gave young actors to play those roles, adding that all of these made life difficult for them.
Kowhe said he had discussed the phenomenon with many industry top-brass but to no avail. He said though he was growing older, he was ready for movie roles, adding that he had started featuring in “Kaneshie Odorkor” series.

Sometimes is very sad in Ghana when the movie industries should call the old age actors to come and play the'er row as an actor, they rather dress young guy to acct like old age or middle age man which is very bad.Ghana system is very bad even disable, blind had to suffer, things are not working well in this country. Kowhe is talking about movie roles so he can also make something for himself, then he can be able to feed himself. You guys should understand him ..not to talk about savings. You can save but life can change and you will ending up losing everything.
KOHWE WHAT ABOUT MY RETIRED UNCLE PAINTER OF 92 YEARS? MUST GHANAIANS AND THE GOVT CATER FOR HIM? NO! HE PLANNED HIS FUTURE DURING HIS CAREER AND AND DO NOT NEED ANYONE'S SUPPORT EXCEPT FAMILY MEMBERS AND CHILDREN HE CARED FOR DURING HIS LIFETIME. SO YOU SHOULD RATHER ADVISE YOUR COLLEAGUE ACTORS TO PLAN WELL FOR THEIR FUTURE. AND STOP THE "BLAME GAME!"
I don't understand this so called celebrities at all. It was a profession you chose and you are suppose to plan your future. Why do you always want people to help you. We have equally pensioners who are also suffering like you. You are not better than those people so stop that noise. When you guys were enjoying and making money did you remember the poor?
didn't save for your retirement? am just asking.
