Ghana beat Nigeria 5-0 in an international friendly hockey encounter on Wednesday at the National Hockey Stadium.

The match was part of activities to mark the one year anniversary of the passing of late former President John Atta Mills and also to recognize his contribution towards the development of the sport.

The Black Sticks dominated their Nigerian counterparts, whose quest for even a consolation remained a dream.

Six minutes into the game, Johnny Botsio opened the scores with a superb hit that unsettled their guests.

The Nigerians gave a good account of themselves but were overpowered by the physical-imposing Ghanaian team who were strong on the ball.

Matthew Damalie doubled the lead by connecting a pass from Joseph Appiah nine minutes later.

On 23 minutes, Botsio scored the third goal to send the crowd into a frenzy mood.

Ernest Opoku struck from a well-rehearsed penalty corner on 54 minutes to register his name in the score sheet and the fourth for his side.

Two minutes to the end, Joseph Appiah wrapped up victory by connecting home from a penalty corner.

The national female team also beat a select side of the Ghana Hockey Association (GHA) by a lone goal with Rachel Bamfo the scorer.

There will be other matches on Saturday, July 27 featuring the participating clubs in the National Hockey League to climax the anniversary.

In attendance were Vice President, Kwesi Amissah-Arthur, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah Minister of Youth and Sports and Professor Francis Dodoo - President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC).

The former President died on July 24 last year at the 37 Military Hospital.
