South African police will provide 24-hour security to the Black Stars during the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) in January.
The gestures will be extended to all the 16 teams participating in the tournament, the organisers have revealed.
This comes following some security challenges in a recent South African match as well as the attack Togo’s team at the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations in Angola.
Afcon organizers gave the assurance in the wake of the Zambia bus being pelted with stones by two boys as they left Soccer City after beating Bafana Bafana 1-0 on November 14.
The incident left Kennedy Mweene and Felix Katongo with minor injuries.
The organisers say they are leaving no stone unturned in terms of the security measures being put in place for the tournament and they have vowed to provide “24-hour security to all teams… Buses carrying players will be escorted by police at all times.”
Furthermore, drinks will be sold in plastic containers at stadiums and glass bottles or cans will not be allowed.
Ghana will be based in Port Elizabeth where they will face DR Congo, Mali and Niger.
