Top Ghana women’s national team goalkeeper, Abiba Memunatu has disclosed that her age was topped up by a mammoth four years many years ago when she first burst onto the national team scene.

In a shocking revelation contrary to the suspected norm that footballers reduce their ages, the agile goalkeeper says she is now actually 29 years old and not the official 33.

Memunatu has remained the Black Queens’ regular number one over the years featuring in FIFA World Cups as well as Africa Women championships, many a time putting up man-of-the-match performances. But she says the quest by Ghanaian team officials to play him for the national team even though she was a minor at the time, prompted the addition of four years to her actual age.

Memunatu has raised the issue in her defence of calls of old age against her and other former national team stars including playmaker Adwoa Bayor who are all set to play in the new Ghana Women’s League which is expected to be launched on Tuesday ahead of December 16 kick-off.

Memunatu has registered for Fabulous Ladies, the women’s side of Glo Ghana Premier League champions, Asante Kotoko and is crying wolf over claims she is too old.

“Yes it’s true, the authorities decided that they have to add four years to my age at the time I first came to the national team. So me, whenever people are saying I’m 33 or 34 that I’m old and my time is up to retire, I just feel uncomfortable because I know I’m only 29,” she explained on live radio. She added on her career: “I’m not retiring yet, I still have a lot to offer and the league coming up is a big incentive to keep on playing.

“Even the Black Queens, I have not retired. I’ve to remain with the team so I can teach the young goalkeepers some one or two things.”
