Former Youth and Sports Minister Nii Lantey Vanderpuye has said sport is not a priority of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).
His comment comes after President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo failed to give substantial briefing on his administration’s plan for sports development in the country during his first State of the Nation Address delivered on Tuesday 21 February.
Speaking to Class Sports, Mr Vanderpuye said the president’s delivery, which captured only a four-second sentence on developing sports in Ghana’s first and second cycle institutions, suggested that sports was less important to the Akufo-Addo government.
“I’m surprised at the address generally but even more disappointed there was next to nothing on sports. We all know the health benefits of sports to a populace and so if the president has failed to make sports a priority in his maiden State of the Nation address, you have a clear idea how he is going to treat sports in his tenure,” he stated.
Mr Vanderpuye’s views were backed by another ex-Minister of Sports, Rashid Pelpuo, who headed the portfolio under the late President John Evans Atta Mills.
“There was nothing of note in sports in his delivery at all. He was just mean in targeting the economy and what he was going to do. Sports is just not part of what he intends to achieve with his administration; it is only an afterthought,” he said.

Sports should not be prioritized but be part of life style of the populace. That being said, NPP, has areas of fulfillment to the people of Ghana, and these area of promises are the priority areas that are to be tackled. These people, what they mean of sports, is BLACK STAR, and this way, is not NPP, way. In the NPP general scheme of work programming, SPORTS, in included, and will be tackled from the grass-root, to the center. Presently, Sports affairs are being handled in a haphazard manner which we are coming to correct.
in which capacity does this man speak? who does he think he is? has he forgotten that black star can"t qualify for the next years' world cup because of him? if he knows what's the best for him he would keep quiet
Mr Vanderpuye, You once said you'd be the longest serving Sports Minister on radio. You said that thinking that you'd remain power. Now look at you. You are sitting in opposition, concocting news to stay relevant. Go and sign up for some evening literacy classes to learn to speak and write so that you can participate on the floor of parliament. Don't wate our ears. We have a new sports minister. Let him do his work. You people are incorrigible!!!
Very myopic thinking, Mr. Rookie. A good party members should be able to critize their leaders. We do not want to commit the same mistakes as the NDC. Sports of which soccer is a subset is of or should be part and inculcated in the normal lifestyles of all especially the youth. I grew up not too strong but because I am a skillful soccer player and the rigorous training sections has not made me only stronger but mentally and intellectually very strong having two masters at my age. All credit to sports and constant training of the body and mind. Remember effective sports structure and infrastructure will reduce the over all bill on healthcare and pressure on our morgues will reduce. Think about that. My brother if for nothing at all learn how to play squash or if I look at you bowling will even help. A healthy Nation is definitely destined for a healthy economy and prosperity. Mr. President give Mr. Vincent Sowah Odotei and Isaac Asiamh the responsibility to nurture a healthier youth for the Nation.
Fffoool...jailing apes like you will soon be his priority...
We have wasted enough money on black stars. Does football and sports save lives. To hell with sports(black stars).ALL we need is education, electricity, good health care and basic human needs.
